Though even, 2014 is not divisible by 4, making it a year for both the Winter Olympics, and the Fields Medals – the highest award given for Mathematics.  In the spirit of our annual Nobel Physics Prize Colloquium, I will give the first of several Colloquia on the subjects of this year’s Fields medals, starting with Avila’s prize for work on a variety of Physics-inspired questions on the spectrum and dynamical properties of Schrödinger operators.  Come along and find out what they are, why they are interesting, and what Avila did.
