Genetic and optical approaches for describing neural circuits

My group is interested in the relationships among neurons, the circuits that they form, and the behaviours that they create.  These analyses span genetics, behavioural biology, advanced microscopy, and computational biology.  In this seminar, I will describe our overall approach for linking neurons to behaviour, and share some of our recent published and unpublished results.  This will include traditional biological methods (genetics and behaviour), but also a suite of emerging technologies (optogenetics) that allow us to study neural function with fluorescent light.  For this audience, I will also highlight some of the challenges, in terms of optical physics and computation, that we need to solve for this system to reach its full potential.
