This colloquium will be held 12 noon, 2nd June, in Goddard 08-139

This talk will discuss some of the joys, trials and challenges of adapting from a background in pure science (namely, an undergraduate degree in Theoretical Physics) to a career of applied research that now includes extensive collaboration with industry partners and founding a startup company. I will highlight some critical problems of global significance that can potentially be addressed in part by development of new materials. I will also discuss several “showstoppers” that often dramatically limit the real world impact of academic research (including my own).
