Atom Clocks and Time Dissemination

Speaker: Professor Carl Weiss (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Braunschweig, Germany)
Date: 25th November 2011

Professor Carl Weiss will tell us about some of the time services and research conducted at the PTB (PTB functions similiarly to NIST in the USA). The department’s research comprises cold atom and single ion clocks, laser physics research, laser spectroscopy,  extending even to nuclear spectroscopy. The services comprise timescale realisation and dissemination by long wave transmitter (100 Million users presently) and by internet (3000 inquiries for time per second, presently). Services also include precision synchronization of time between Asia, Europe, and Americas (within 10 nanoseconds) and the time segment of the European satellite navigation system  “Galileo” and instrumentation realisation.
