Optical Fibres – Past, Present & Future

Prof. John Love, The Australian National University

Optical fibres in the 21st century permeate a rapidly increasing number of areas of human endeavour, ranging from the backbone of the world’s digital communications, through sensing, astronomy, architecture and transport to medicine and nanotechnology. This talk will present an overview of these developments over the last 80 years, starting with endoscopy, and with special emphasis on Australia’s contribution. It will also focus on latest developments using the direct writing of compact three-dimensional light processing devices into solid glass.
