The experimental laser physics group comprises five academic staff, three post-doctoral fellows and sixteen postgraduate students. Laser facilities include a frequency stabilised cw titanium sapphire with 38W argon ion pump, a 300 mW 351 nm Ar-ion laser and a Mira fs laser with Verdi solid state pump. There are also two isotopic CO2 lasers and 15NH3 lasers, a hybrid CW/TEA CO2 laser, a 12W argon-ion laser and ring dye laser, two injection seeded Nd:YAG lasers with frequency doublers, triplers and quadruplesr, an unseeded Nd:YAG laser with frequency doubler and tripler, two dye lasers with SHG crystals and a Princeton Instruments intensified CCD camera, an imaging spectrometer with a liquid nitrogen cooled CCD detector, together with a wide range of ancillary equipment.
Other facilities include two rubidium magneto-optical atom traps, several optical tweezers setups, a scanning confocal optical system, liquid helium cryostats, various optical microscopes and single photon counting equipment. Activities of the group span the spectrum, from ultraviolet to microwaves, from high power pulses to single photons, with a mixture of fundamental and applied work and with an increasing emphasis on collaboration with biologists, geologists, and engineers. There are active collaborations with groups in Italy, Germany ,Sweden and the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada.
