In earthquake areas such as Tokyo it has been discovered that skyscrapers
should not be built too rigid, if they are to withstand severe earthquakes.
It is better to build structures capable of oscillation and to provide
adequate damping. By setting up the response of a skyscraper to an
earthquake as the solution to a set of coupled oscillators, using methods
developed above we can simulate the behaviour of a multistory building
during an earthquake.
