So who am I and what do I do? I have currently submitted a thesis for the research Master of Science degree at the University of Queensland under the supervision of Dr Lech Hajkowicz. My work involved studies on the mid-latitude ionosphere, and in particular, scintillation activity in radio frequency satellite signals. As a significant component of my Masters project, I am responsible for the construction and maintenance of the Space Physics Research Group home page.

My actual task for the Master of Science degree involved the construction of an efficient data sharing platform to be utilized in a collaborative research project between the Physics department at the University of Queensland and Communications Research Laboratories (CRL), in Japan. The project consists of several different sections under development

One of the more crucial stages in this collaborative project is the establishment of a recording system for examining the conjugate behaviour of the mid-latitude ionosphere in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The Transit series of satellites is used operating in polar orbits and transmitting radio signals at a frequency of 149.988 MHz. The signal level, as determined by the AGC of a receiver collecting signals collected by a five-element Yagi antenna and boosted by a pre-amp, is read by a computer and digitised information stores are created. The data can then later be processed by computer software that has been developed for the task.

To make the cooperation effort cheaper and more time efficient, I have constructed a WWW site that will allow the data that is collected in each of the sites to become accessable in the shortest possible time frame and with the minimum of human intervention. This site will be thrown open to any researcher interested in using the service with the possibility of using the analysis software and data remotely (i.e. obviate the need to download the information in raw form before searching for information of specific interest). Such processes are at this time very limited or non-existent.

The co-operative effort between the UQ Space Research Group and CRL is documented by a web page that lists the current state of affairs.
