Title: Merging of single-particle levels in finite Fermi systems

Fermi surface in finite Fermi systems are studied, focusing on the case in
which these levels are degenerate. The interaction of the quasiparticles
occupying these levels lifts the degeneracy and affects the distance between
the closest levels on opposite sides of the Fermi surface, as the number of
particles in the system is varied. In addition to the familiar scenario of
level crossing, a new phenomenon is uncovered, in which the merging of
single-particle levels results in the disappearance of well-defined
single-particle excitations. Implications of this finding are discussed for
nuclear, solid-state, and atomic systems.

detecting optical rotation due to the precession of an aligned ground state in

the magnetometer can be adjusted to any desired value by tuning the bias
magnetic field. We demonstrate a sensitivity of $100\thinspace{\rm
pG/\sqrt{Hz}\thinspace(RMS)}$ in a 3.5 cm diameter, paraffin coated cell. Based
on detection at the photon shot-noise limit, we project a sensitivity of

Title: On-site number statistics of ultracold lattice bosons

   We study on-site occupation number fluctuations in a system of interacting
bosons in an optical lattice. The ground-state distribution is obtained
analytically in the limiting cases of strong and weak interaction, and by means
of exact Monte Carlo simulations in the strongly correlated regime. As the
interaction is increased, the distribution evolves from Poissonian in the
non-interacting gas to a sharply peaked distribution in the Mott-insulator (MI)
regime. In the special case of large occupation numbers, we demonstrate
analytically and check numerically that there exists a wide interval of
interaction strength, in which the on-site number fluctuations remain Gaussian
and are gradually squeezed until they are of order unity near the superfluid
(SF)-MI transition. Recently, the on-site number statistics were studied
experimentally in a wide range of lattice potential depths [Phys. Rev. Lett.
\textbf{96}, 090401 (2006)]. In our simulations, we are able to directly
reproduce experimental conditions using temperature as the only free parameter.
Pronounced temperature dependence suggests that measurements of on-site atom
number fluctuations can be employed as a reliable method of thermometry in both
SF and MI regimes.

Title: Mixture of bosonic and spin-polarized fermionic atoms in an optical

   We investigate the properties of Bose-Fermi mixtures for experimentally
relevant parameters in one dimension using numerical methods. We find that the
strong attractive interaction between the bosons and fermions leads to the
creat ion of polaronic particles. The effect of the fermions on the bosons is
not only to deepen the parabolic trapping potential, but also to reduce the
bosonic repulsion. This reduction would theoretically lead to an increase in
the bosonic visibility. The opposite was observed however in the experimental
87Rb - 40K systems, most likely due to a sharp rise in temperature.

in two dimensions (2D) and 3D based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) with
an angular momentum rotation term. By applying a time-splitting technique for
decoupling the nonlinearity and properly using the alternating direction
implicit (ADI) technique for the coupling in the angular momentum rotation term
in the GPE, at every time step, the GPE in rotational frame is decoupled into a
nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE) and two partial differential
equations with constant coefficients. This allows us to develop new
time-splitting spectral (TSSP) methods for computing the dynamics of BEC in a
rotational frame.The new numerical method is explicit, unconditionally stable,
and of spectral accuracy in space and second order accuracy in time. Moreover,
it is time reversible and time transverse invariant, and conserves the position
density in the discretized level if the GPE does. Extensive numerical results
are presented to confirm the above properties of the new numerical method for
rotating BEC in 2D and 3D.

Title: Criterion for bosonic superfluidity in an optical lattice

lattices based on a visibly "sharp" bosonic momentum distribution $n({\bf k})$
can be misleading, for even a {\em normal} Bose gas can have a similarly
"sharp" $n({\bf k})$. We show that superfluidity can be detected from the
so-called "'visibility" $(v)$ of $n({\bf k})$ $-$ that $v$ must be 1 within

however, have interpreted states with $v<1$ as superfluid. Such states are in
fact normal, reflecting strong temperature effects in the system. These normal
states, however, allow one to explore the physics in the quantum critical

   We have demonstrated and modeled a simple and efficient method to transfer
atoms from a first Magneto-Optical Trap (MOT) to a second one. Two independent
setups, with cesium and rubidium atoms respectively, have shown that a high
power and slightly diverging laser beam optimizes the transfer between the two
traps when its frequency is red-detuned from the atomic transition. This
pushing laser extracts a continuous beam of slow and cold atoms out of the
first MOT and also provides a guiding to the second one through the dipolar
force. In order to optimize the transfer efficiency, the dependence of the
atomic flux on the pushing laser parameters (power, detuning, divergence and
waist) is investigated. The atomic flux is found to be proportional to the
first MOT loading rate. Experimentally, the transfer efficiency reaches 70%,
corresponding to a transfer rate up to 2.7x10^8 atoms/s with a final velocity
of 5.5 m/s. We present a simple analysis of the atomic motion inside the
pushing--guiding laser, in good agreement with the experimental data.

Title: Association of molecules using a resonantly modulated magnetic field

   We study the process of associating molecules from atomic gases using a
magnetic field modulation that is resonant with the molecular binding energy.
We show that maximal conversion is obtained by optimising the amplitude and
frequency of the modulation for the particular temperature and density of the
gas. For small modulation amplitudes, resonant coupling of an unbound atom pair
to a molecule occurs at a modulation frequency corresponding to the sum of the
molecular binding energy and the relative kinetic energy of the atom pair. An
atom pair with an off-resonant energy has a probability of association which
oscillates with a frequency and time-varying amplitude which are primarily
dependent on its detuning. Increasing the amplitude of the modulation tends to
result in less energetic atom pairs being resonantly coupled to the molecular
state, and also alters the dynamics of the transfer from continuum states with
off-resonant energies. This leads to maxima and minima in the total conversion
from the gas as a function of the modulation amplitude. Increasing the
temperature of the gas leads to an increase in the modulation frequency
providing the best fit to the thermal distribution, and weakens the resonant
frequency dependence of the conversion. Mean-field effects can alter the
optimal modulation frequency and lead to the excitation of higher modes. Our
simulations predict that resonant association can be effective for binding
energies of order $h \times 1$ MHz.

Title: Long-distance teleportation of atomic qubit via optical interferometry

   The problem of long-distance teleportation of single-atom qubits via a common
photonic channel is examined within the framework of a Mach-Zender optical
interferometer. As expected, when a coherent state is used as input, a
high-finesse optical cavity is required to overcome sensitivity to spontaneous
emission. However, we find that a number-squeezed light field in a twin-Fock
state can in principle create useful entanglement without cavity-enhancement.
Both approaches require single photon counting detectors, and best results are
obtained by combining cavity-feedback with twin-fock inputs. Such an approach
may allow a fidelity of $.99$ using a two-photon input and currently available
mirror and detector technology. In addition, the present approach can be
conveniently extended to generate multi-site entanglement and entanglement
swapping, both of which are necessities in quantum networks.
