We study quantum dynamics of an atomic Fermi system with a finite number of
particles, N, after it is released from a harmonic trapping potential. We
consider two different initial states: The Fermi sea state and the paired state
described by the projection of the grand-canonical BCS wave function to the
subspace with a fixed number of particles. In the former case, we derive exact
and simple analytic expressions for the dynamics of particle density and
density-density correlation functions, taking into account the level
quantization and possible anisotropy of the trap. In the latter case of a
paired state, we obtain analytic expressions for the density and its
correlators in the leading order with respect to the ratio of the trap
frequency and the superconducting gap (the ratio assumed small). We discuss
several dynamic features, such as time evolution of the peak due to pair
correlations, which may be used to distinguish between the Fermi sea and the
paired state.

Title: Entangling two atoms in spatially separated cavities through both photon
   emission and absorption processes
Authors: Peng Peng, Fu-li Li
\\
We consider a system consisting of a $\Lambda$-type atom and a V-type atom,
which are individually trapped in two spatially separated cavities that are
connected by an optical fibre. We show that an extremely entangled state of the
two atoms can be deterministically generated through both photon emission of
the $\Lambda$-type atom and photon absorption of the V-type atom in an ideal
situation. The influence of various decoherence processes such as spontaneous
emission and photon loss on the fidelity of the entangled state is also
investigated. We find that the effect of photon leakage out of the fibre on the
fidelity can be greatly diminished in some special cases. As regards the effect
of spontaneous emission and photon loss from the cavities, we find that the
present scheme with a fidelity higher than 0.98 may be realized under current
experiment conditions.

Authors: Anne E. B. Nielsen and Klaus Molmer

\\
Conditional preparation of two-photon states from a continuous wave
non-degenerate optical parametric oscillator is investigated. We derive the
phase space Wigner function for the output state conditioned on two nearby
photo detection events, and we maximize its overlap with a two-photon state by
varying the temporal output state mode function. In the low intensity limit, we
generalize to n-photon state production. We find a simple expression for the
conditional output, and from this we determine the optimal output state mode
function and n-photon state fidelity.

We study the ground-state properties and nonequilibrium dynamics of hard-core
bosons confined in one-dimensional lattices in the presence of an additional
periodic potential (superlattice) and a harmonic trap. The dynamics is analyzed
after a sudden switch-on or switch-off of the superlattice potential, which can
bring the system into insulating or superfluid phases, respectively. A collapse
and revival of the zero-momentum peak can be seen in the first case. We study
in detail the relaxation of these integrable systems towards equilibrium. We
show how after relaxation time averages of physical observables, like the
momentum distribution function, can be predicted by means of a generalization
of the Gibbs distribution.

Title: Dimer states in atomic mixtures
Authors: K. Ziegler
Categories: cond-mat.stat-mech

\\
A mixture of heavy atoms in a Mott state and light spin-1/2 fermionic atoms
is studied in an optical lattice. Scattering processes excite the heavy atoms
and generate an attraction between the light atoms. An effective Hamiltonian is
derived that describes tunneling of single fermions, tunneling of fermionic
pairs and an exchange of fermionic spins. An eigenstate of the last two
processes is found in form of an alternating dimer state. This state has a
global symmetry with respect to a discrete rotation of all dimers. Fluctuations
due to rotations of dimer clusters may lead to a transition to a dimer liquid
in frustrated optical lattices.

We extend the one-body phase function upper bound on the superfluid fraction
in a periodic solid (a spatially ordered supersolid) to include two-body phase
correlations. The one-body current density is no longer proportional to the
gradient of the one-body phase times the one-body density, but rather it
depends also on two-body correlation functions. The equations that
simultaneously determine the one-body and two-body phase functions require a
knowledge of one-, two-, and three-body correlation functions. The approach can
also be extended to disordered solids. Fluids, with two-body densities and
two-body phase functions that are translationally invariant, cannot take
advantage of this additional degree of freedom to lower their energy.

In this paper we discuss how partial knowledge of the density of states for a
model can be used to give good approximations of the energy distributions in a
given temperature range. From these distributions one can then obtain the
statistical moments corresponding to eg the internal energy and the specific
heat. These questions have gained interest apropos of several recent methods
for estimating the density of states of spin models. As a worked example we
finally apply these methods to the 3-state Potts model for cubic lattices of
linear order up to 128. We give estimates of eg latent heat and critical
temperature, as well as the microcanonical properties of interest.

We have built a microwave Fabry-Perot resonator made of diamond-machined
copper mirrors coated with superconducting niobium. Its damping time (Tc = 130
ms at 51 GHz and 0.8 K) corresponds to a finesse of 4.6 e9, the highest ever
reached for a Fabry-Perot in any frequency range. We have tested this resonator
by sending across it two circular Rydberg atoms, the first emitting a photon
and the second absorbing it after a delay of 1/10 s. This long storage time
photon box opens novel perspectives for quantum information. It can be used to
perform sequences of hundreds of gate operations on individual atomic qubits. A
set-up with one or two photon boxes can store mesoscopic fields made of
hundreds of photons for decoherence and non-locality studies.

We have developed a source of cold LiH molecules for Stark deceleration and
trapping experiments. Lithium metal is ablated from a solid target into a
supersonically expanding carrier gas. The translational, rotational and
vibrational temperatures are 0.9(0.1) K, 5.9(0.5) K and 468(17) K respectively.
Although they have not reached thermal equilibrium with the carrier gas, we
estimate that 90% of the LiH molecules are in the ground state, X^{1}
\Sigma^{+} (v=0, J=0). With a single 7 ns ablation pulse, the number of
molecules in the ground state is 4.5(1.8)*10^{7} molecules per steradian. A
second, delayed, ablation pulse produces another LiH beam in a different part
of the same gas pulse, thereby almost doubling the signal. A long pulse,
lasting 150 microseconds, can make the beam up to 15 times more intense.

The ground state phase diagram of imbalanced Fermi-Fermi mixtures in optical
lattices is analyzed as a function of interaction strength, population
imbalance, filling fraction and tunneling parameters. It is shown that
population imbalanced Fermi-Fermi mixtures reduce to strongly interacting
Bose-Fermi mixtures in the molecular limit, in sharp contrast with homogenous
systems where the resulting Bose-Fermi mixture is weakly interacting.
Furthermore, insulating phases are found in optical lattices of Fermi-Fermi
mixtures in addition to the standard phase-separated or coexisting
superfluid/excess-fermion phases found in homogeneous systems. The insulating
states can be a molecular Bose-Mott insulator (BMI), a Fermi-Pauli insulator
(FPI), phase-separated BMI/FPI mixture or a Bose-Fermi checkerboard (BFC).

We investigate the physics of dipolar bosons in a two dimensional optical
lattice. It is known that due to the long-range character of dipole-dipole
interaction, the ground state phase diagram of a gas of dipolar bosons in an
optical lattice presents novel quantum phases, like checkerboard and supersolid
phases. In this paper, we consider the properties of the system beyond its
ground state, finding that it is characterised by a multitude of almost
degenerate metastable states, often competing with the ground state. This makes
dipolar bosons in a lattice similar to a disordered system and opens
possibilities of using them for quantum memories.

For nearly half a century the supersolid phase of matter has remained
mysterious, not only eluding experimental observation, but also generating a
great deal of controversy among theorists. Recent discovery of what is
interpreted as a non-classical moment of inertia at low temperature in solid
He-4 has elicited much excitement as a possible first observation of a
supersolid phase. In the two years following the discovery, however, more
puzzles than answers have been provided to the fundamental issue of whether the
supersolid phase exists, in helium or any other naturally occurring condensed
matter system. Presently, there is no established theoretical framework to
understand the body of experimental data on He-4. Different microscopic
mechanisms that have been suggested to underlie superfluidity in a perfect
quantum crystal do not seem viable for \he4, for which a wealth of experimental
and theoretical evidence points to an insulating crystalline ground state. This
perspective addresses some of the outstanding problems with the interpretation
of recent experimental observations of the apparent superfluid response in He-4
(seen now by several groups) and discusses various scenarios alternative to the
homogeneous supersolid phase, such as superfluidity induced by extended defects
of the crystalline structure which include grain boundaries, dislocations,
anisotropic stresses, etc. Can a metastable superfluid "glassy" phase exist,
and can it be relevant to some of the experimental observations ? One of the
most interesting and unsolved fundamental questions is what interatomic
potentials, given the freedom to design one, can support an ideal supersolid
phase in continuous space, and can they be found in Nature.

A microscopic model for the supersolid phase in $^4$He is given. On a grain
boundary, atom motion is well described by a disordered Bose-Hubbard model. We
argue that the clean system is a commensurate Mott insulator but in the
presence of disorder, a supersolid state obtains. At work is the
disorder-induced closing of the Mott gap. We find that the transition
temperature to the supersolid state is an increasing function of disorder as is
seen experimentally. We also find that a glassy phase mediated by disorder
possesses a period shift, though it lacks superflow. This latter observation is
relevant to solid hydrogen in which a period shift is observed without
superflow.

Gaussian distribution is commonly used as a good approximation to study the
trapped one-component Bose-condensed atoms with relatively small nonlinear
effect. It is not adequate in dealing with the one-component system of large
nonlinear effect, nor the two-component system where phase separation exists.
We propose a modified Gaussian distribution which is more effective when
dealing with the one-component system with relatively large nonlinear terms as
well as the two-component system. The modified Gaussian is also used to study
the breathing modes of the two-component system, which shows a drastic change
in the mode dispersion at the occurrence of the phase separation. The results
obtained are in agreement with other numerical results.

\\
We analyze the Mott-insulator phases of dipolar bosonic gases placed in
neighboring but unconnected 1D traps. Whereas for short-range interactions the
1D systems are independent, the non-local dipole-dipole interaction induces a
direct Mott-insulator to pair-superfluid transition which significantly
modifies the boundaries of the lowest Mott-insulator phases. The lowest
boundary of the lowest Mott regions becomes progressively constant as a
function of the hopping rate, eventually inverting its slope, leading to a
re-entrant configuration which is retained in 2D. We discuss the consequences
of this effect on the spatial Mott-insulator plateaux in experiments with
additional harmonic confinement, showing that anti-intuitively the plateaux may
become wider for increasing hopping. Our results are also applicable to
non-dipolar boson-boson mixtures.

Effective field theory (EFT) methods for a uniform system of fermions with
short-range, natural interactions are extended to include pairing correlations,
as part of a program to develop a systematic Kohn-Sham density functional

local composite operators leads to a free-energy functional that includes
pairing by applying an inversion method order-by-order in the EFT expansion. A
consistent renormalization scheme is demonstrated for the uniform system

With Girardeau's Fermi-Bose mapping, we find the exact ground states of
hard-core bosons residing in a one dimensional periodic potential. The analysis
of these ground states shows that when the number of bosons $N$ is commensurate
with the number of wells $M$ in the periodic potential, the boson system is a
Mott insulator whose energy gap, however, is given by the single-particle band
gap of the periodic potential; when $N$ is not commensurate with $M$, the
system is a metal (not a superfluid). The Kronig-Penney potential is used to

Title: Designing spin-1 lattice models using polar molecules

\\
We describe how to design a large class of always on spin-1 interactions
between polar molecules trapped in an optical lattice. The spin degrees of
freedom correspond to the hyperfine levels of a ro-vibrational ground state
molecule. Interactions are induced using a microwave field to mix ground states
in one hyperfine manifold with the spin entangled dipole-dipole coupled excited
states. Using multiple fields anistropic models in one, two, or three
dimensions, can be built with tunable spatial range. An illustrative example in
one dimension is the generalized Haldane model, which at a specific parameter
has a gapped valence bond solid ground state. The interaction strengths are
large compared to decoherence rates and should allow for probing the rich phase
structure of strongly correlated systems, including dimerized and gapped
phases.

Sound waves are observed and studied in an optically trapped degenerate Fermi
gas of spin-up and spin-down atoms with magnetically tunable interactions.
Measurements are made throughout the crossover region, from a
weakly-interacting Fermi gas through the resonant Fermi superfluid regime to a
Bose condensate of dimer molecules. The measured sound velocities test the
equation of state and confirm the universal hypothesis.

A collapse of the trapped boson- fermion mixture with the attraction between
bosons and fermions is investigated in the framework of the effective
Hamiltonian for the Bose system. The properties of the $^{87}$Rb and $^{40}$K
mixture are analyzed quantitatively at $T= 0$. We find numerically solutions of
modified Gross- Pitaevskii equation which continuously go from stable to
unstable branch. We discuss the relation of the onset of collapse with
macroscopic properties of the system. A comparison with the case of a Bose

We analyze the quantum phase transition in the Bose-Hubbard model borrowing
two tools from Quantum Information Theory, i.e. the ground-state fidelity and
entanglement measures. We consider systems at unitary filling comprising up to
50 sites and show for the first time that a finite-size scaling analysis in
terms of these quantities provides excellent estimates for the quantum critical
point.
We conclude that fidelity is particularly suited for revealing a quantum
phase transition and pinning down the critical point thereof, while
entanglement measures give a deeper insight into the mechanisms governing the
transition.

For atoms with large scattering length, the dependence of the 3-body
recombination rate on the collision energy is determined by the scattering
length and the Efimov 3-body parameters and can be expressed in terms of
universal functions of a single scaling variable. We use published results on
the 3-body recombination rate for 4He atoms to constrain the universal
functions. We then use those universal functions to calculate the 3-body
recombination rate for other atoms with large scattering length at nonzero
temperature. The constraints from the 4He results are strong if the scattering
length is near the minimum of the 3-body recombination rate at threshold. We
apply our results to 133Cs atoms with a large positive scattering length, and
compare them with experimental results from the Innsbruck group.

\\
We investigate the linewidth of a quasi-continuous atom laser within a
semiclassical framework. In the high flux regime, the lasing mode can exhibit a
number of undesirable features such as density fluctuations. We show that the
output therefore has a complicated structure that can be somewhat simplified
using Raman outcoupling methods and energy-momentum selection rules. In the
weak outcoupling limit, we find that the linewidth of an atom laser is
instantaneously Fourier limited, but, due to the energy `chirp' associated with
the draining of a condensate, the long-term linewidth of an atom laser is
equivalent to the chemical potential of the condensate source. We show that
correctly sweeping the outcoupling frequency can recover the Fourier-limited
linewidth.

Title: Multimode quantum limits to the linewidth of an atom laser
Authors: Mattias T. Johnsson and Joseph J. Hope

\\
The linewidth of an atom laser can be limited by excitation of higher energy
modes in the source Bose-Einstein condensate, energy shifts in that condensate
due to the atomic interactions, or phase diffusion of the lasing mode due to
those interactions. The first two are effects that can be described with a
semiclassical model, and have been studied in detail for both pumped and
unpumped atom lasers. The third is a purely quantum statistical effect, and has
been studied only in zero dimensional models. We examine an unpumped atom laser
in one dimension using a quantum field theory using stochastic methods based on
the truncated Wigner approach. This allows spatial and statistical effects to
be examined simultaneously, and the linewidth limit for unpumped atom lasers is
quantified in various limits.

We observe electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) on the 5s to 5p
transition in a room temperature rubidium vapour cell by coupling the 5p state
to a Rydberg state (ns or nd with n=26 to 124). We demonstrate that the narrow
line-width of the EIT resonance (2 MHz) allows precise measurement of the d
state fine structure splitting, and together with the sensitivity of the
Rydberg state to electric fields, we are able to detect transient electric
fields produced by the dynamics of charges within the cell. Coherent coupling
of Rydberg states via EIT could also be used for cross-phase modulation and

An essentially-exact approach to compute the wavefunction in the
time-dependent many-boson Schr\"odinger equation is derived and employed to
study accurately the process of splitting a trapped condensate when rumping-up
a barrier such that a double-well is formed. We follow the role played by
many-body excited states during the splitting process. Among others, a
'counter-intuitive' regime is found in which the evolution of the condensate
when the barrier is rumped-up sufficiently slow {\it is not} to the
ground-state which is a fragmented condensate, but to a low-lying excited-state
which is a coherent condensate. Experimental implications are discussed.

We consider the STIRAP process in a three-level atom. Viewed as a closed
system, no geometric phase is acquired. But in the presence of spontaneous
emission and/or collisional relaxation we show numerically that a
non-vanishing, purely real, geometric phase is acquired during STIRAP, whose
magnitude grows with the decay rates. Rather than viewing this
decoherence-induced geometric phase as a nuisance, it can be considered an
example of "beneficial decoherence": the environment provides a mechanism for
the generation of geometric phases which would otherwise require an extra
experimental control knob.

We describe the behavior of two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in
time-dependent (TD) trap potentials and TD Rabi (or tunneling) frequency, using
the two-mode approach. Starting from Bloch states, we succeed to get analytical
solutions for the TD Schroedinger equation and present a detailed analysis of
the relative and geometric phases acquired by the wave function of the
condensates, as well as their population imbalance. We also establish a
connection between the geometric phases and constants of motion which
characterize the dynamic of the system. Besides analyzing the affects of
temporality on condensates that differs by hyperfine degrees of freedom

\\
The ac Stark effect was used to induce resonant energy transfer between
translationally cold Rydberg atoms. The Rb Rydberg atoms were obtained by laser
excitation of cold atoms from a magneto-optical trap. Using two-photon
microwave spectroscopy of the 49s_{1/2}-50s_{1/2} transition, the field
strength of a 28.5 GHz dressing field was calibrated. When this dressing field
was set at specific field strengths, the two-atom dipole-dipole process
43d_{5/2} + 43d_{5/2} -> 45p_{3/2} + 41f was dramatically enhanced, due to
induced degeneracy of the initial and final states. A series of observed
resonant field strengths correspond to different magnetic sublevel
possibilities for the initial and final states. These agree well with
calculated resonance fields based on a perturbative ac Stark shift formula.
This method for enhancing interactions is complementary to dc
electric-field-induced resonant energy transfer, but has more flexibility due
to the possibility of varying the applied frequency.

performed at various populations of the bright and dark hyperfine states of the

It was recently shown in self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations that a
harmonically trapped dilute gas of fermionic atoms with a repulsive two-body
interaction exhibits a pronounced {\it super-shell} structure: the shell
fillings due to the spherical harmonic trapping potential are modulated by a
beat mode. This changes the ``magic numbers'' occurring between the beat nodes
by half a period. The length and amplitude of the beating mode depends on the
strength of the interaction. We give a qualitative interpretation of the beat
structure in terms of a semiclassical trace formula that uniformly describes
the symmetry breaking U(3) $\to$ SO(3) in a 3D harmonic oscillator potential
perturbed by an anharmonic term $\propto r^4$ with arbitrary strength. We show
that at low Fermi energies (or particle numbers), the beating gross-shell
structure of this system is dominated solely by the two-fold degenerate
circular and (diametrically) pendulating orbits.

We show that the expansion of an initially confined interacting 1D
Bose-Einstein condensate can exhibit Anderson localization in a weak random
potential. For speckle potentials used in quantum gases, the Fourier transform
of the correlation function has a finite support and in 1D there is a mobility
edge $\k_m=1/\sigma_R$, where $\sigma_R$ is the correlation length of the
disorder. Then, for the initial healing length of the expanding condensate
$\xi_{ini}>\sigma_R$ the localization is exponential, and for
$\xi_{ini}<\sigma_R$ it changes to algebraic.

A new final state of gravitational collapse is proposed. By extending the
concept of Bose-Einstein condensation to gravitational systems, a cold, dark,
compact object with an interior de Sitter condensate $p_{_V} = -\rho_{_V}$ and
an exterior Schwarzschild geometry of arbitrary total mass $M$ is constructed.
These are separated by a shell with a small but finite proper thickness $\ell$
of fluid with equation of state $p=+\rho$, replacing both the Schwarzschild and
de Sitter classical horizons. The new solution has no singularities, no event
horizons, and a global time. Its entropy is maximized under small fluctuations
and is given by the standard hydrodynamic entropy of the thin shell, which is
of order $k_{_B}\ell Mc/\hbar$, instead of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy
formula, $S_{_{BH}}= 4\pi k_{_B} G M^2/\hbar c$. Hence unlike black holes, the
new solution is thermodynamically stable and has no information paradox.
