Title: Conversion Efficiencies of Heteronuclear Feshbach Molecules
Authors: Shohei Watabe, and Tetsuro Nikuni
Categories: cond-mat.other

\\
We study the conversion efficiency of heteronuclear Feshbach molecules in
population imbalanced atomic gases formed by ramping the magnetic field
adiabatically. We extend the recent work [J. E. Williams et al., New J. Phys.,
8, 150 (2006)] on the theory of Feshbach molecule formations to various
combinations of quantum statistics of each atomic component. A simple
calculation for a harmonically trapped ideal gas is in good agreement with the
recent experiment [S. B. Papp and C. E. Wieman, Phys. Rev. Lett., 97, 180404
(2006)] without any fitting parameters. We also give the conversion efficiency
as an explicit function of initial peak phase space density of the majority
species for population imbalanced gases. We find that quantum statistics of
atoms is quite important in determing the maximum conversion efficiency.

Using a magnetic-field controlled Feshbach resonance, we create ultracold
fermionic molecules starting from an ultracold Bose-Fermi atom gas mixture. The
resulting mixture of atoms and weakly bound molecules provides a rich system
for studying few-body collisions because of the variety of atomic collision
partners for molecules; either bosonic, fermionic, or distinguishable atoms. We
study the inelastic loss of the fermionic molecules as a function of the
heteronuclear scattering length and find the quantum statistics of the
particles involved in the collision has a dramatic effect on the loss rates
near the Feshbach resonance. In particular, we find it is possible to realize a
molecule lifetime as long as 100 ms near the Feshbach resonance.

For spiral wavevectors past a critical value, spin wave excitation energies

Recently, a homogeneous superfluid state with a single gapless Fermi surface
was predicted to be the ground state of an ultracold Fermi gas with spin
population imbalance in the regime of molecular Bose-Einstein condensation. We
study vortices in this novel state using a symmetry-based effective field
theory, which captures the low-energy physics of gapless fermions and
superfluid phase fluctuations. This theory is applicable to all spin-imbalanced
ultracold Fermi gases in the superfluid regime, regardless of whether the
original fermion pairing interaction is weak or strong. We find a remarkable,
unconventional form of the interaction between vortices. The presence of
gapless fermions gives rise to a spatially oscillating potential, akin to the
RKKY indirect-exchange interaction in non-magnetic metals. We compare the
parameters of the effective theory to the experimentally measurable quantities
and further discuss the conditions for the verification of the predicted new
feature. Our study opens up an interesting question as to the nature of the
vortex lattice resulting from the competition between the usual repulsive
logarithmic (2D Coulomb) and predominantly attractive fermion-induced
interactions.

\\
Partial Quantum Nearest Neighbor Probability Density Functions (PQNNPDF's)
are formulated for the purpose of determining the behavior of quantum mixed
systems in equilibrium in a manner analogous to that provided for classical
multi-component systems. Developments in partial quantum m-tuplet distribution
functions, a generalization of the partial quantum radial distribution
function, along with their relationship to PQNNPDF's, are briefly elucidated.
The calculation of statistical thermodynamic properties of quantum mixtures is
presented for arbitrary material systems. Application to the limiting case of
dilute, weakly correlated quantum gas mixtures has been outlined and the second
virial coefficient is derived. The case of dilute strongly degenerate mixtures
is also addressed, providing an expression for the PQNNPDF applicable in this
thermodynamic regime.

One of the most promising applications of ultracold gases in optical lattices
is the possibility to use them as quantum emulators of more complex condensed
matter systems. We provide benchmark calculations, based on exact quantum Monte
Carlo simulations, for the emulator to be tested against. We report results for
the ground state phase diagram of the two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model at
unity filling factor. We precisely trace out the critical behavior of the
system and resolve the region of small insulating gaps, \Delta<< J. The
critical point is found to be (J/U)_c=0.05974(3), in perfect agreement with the
result of Ref. 1. We present data for the effective mass of particle and hole
excitations inside the insulating phase. We obtain the critical temperature for
the superfluid-normal transition at unity filling factor. We also propose a
simple and efficient cooling protocol.

We report on the generation of a quantum degenerate Fermi-Fermi mixture of
two different atomic species. The quantum degenerate mixture is realized
employing sympathetic cooling of fermionic Li-6 and K-40 gases by an
evaporatively cooled bosonic Rb-87 gas. We describe the combination of trapping
and cooling methods that proved crucial to successfully cool the mixture. In
particular, we study the last part of the cooling process and show that the
efficiency of sympathetic cooling of the Li-6 gas by Rb-87 is increased by the
presence of K-40 through catalytic cooling. Due to the differing physical
properties of the two components, the quantum degenerate Li-6 K-40 Fermi-Fermi
mixture is an excellent candidate for a stable, heteronuclear system allowing
to study several so far unexplored types of quantum matter.

We show that dark solitons in 1D bose systems may be excited by resonant
absorption of single quanta of an external ac field. The energy of the quantum
$\hbar\omega$ should be slightly blue-detuned from the energy of a soliton with
momentum $\hbar q$, where $q$ is the external field wavenumber $q$. We
calculate the absorption cross-section and show that it has power-law
dependence on the frequency detuning. This reflects the quantum nature of the
absorption process and the orthogonality catastrophe phenomenon associated with
it.

We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate of ultracold atoms loaded into a
square optical lattice and subject to a static force. For vanishing atom-atom
interactions the atoms perform periodic Bloch oscillations for arbitrary
direction of the force. We study the stability of these oscillations for
non-vanishing interactions, which is shown to depend on an alignment of the
force vector with respect to the lattice crystallographic axes. If the force is
aligned along any of the axes, the mean field approach can be used to identify
the stability conditions. On the contrary, for a misaligned force one has to
employ the microscopic approach, which predicts periodic modulation of Bloch
oscillations in the limit of a large forcing.

We investigate the dynamics of a coupled atom-field system. Atoms trapped in
a double-well potential interact dispersively with a damped and driven cavity
mode. The atomic interwell tunneling couples to the dynamics of the field
because of the position dependent atom-field coupling. The system is a close
analogue of the Dicke model in the dispersive regime and is characterized by
two incommensurate time scales, the atomic interwell tunneling rate and the
cavity loss rate. This results in drastically different behaviors in the
short-time and long-time intervals.

Atomic collisions are included in an interacting system of optical fields and
trapped atoms allowing field amplification. We study the effects of collisions
on the system stability. Also a study of the degree of entanglement between
atomic and optical fields is made. We found that, for an atomic field initially
in a vacuum state and optical field in a coherent state, the degree of
entanglement does not depend on the optical field intensity or phase. We show
that in conditions of exponential instability the system presents at long times
two distinct stationary degree of entanglement with collisions affecting only
one of them.

\\
We investigate a paradigm example of cavity quantum electrodynamics with many
body systems: an ultracold atomic gas inside a pumped optical resonator. In
particular, we study the stability of atomic insulator-like states, confined by
the mechanical potential emerging from the cavity field spatial mode structure.
As in open space, when the optical potential is sufficiently deep, the atomic
gas is in the Mott-like state. Inside the cavity, however, the potential
depends on the atomic distribution, which determines the refractive index of
the medium, thus altering the intracavity field amplitude. We derive the
effective Bose-Hubbard model describing the physics of the system in one
dimension and study the crossover between the superfluid -- Mott insulator
quantum states. We determine the regions of parameters where the atomic
insulator states are stable, and predict the existence of overlapping stability
regions corresponding to competing insulator-like states. Bistable behavior,
controlled by the pump intensity, is encountered in the vicinity of the shifted
cavity resonance.

In this paper we discuss Bose-Einstein spinor condensates for F=1 atoms in
the context of 87Rb, as studied experimentally by the Stamper-Kurn group
[Sadler et al. Nature (2006)]. The dynamical quantum fluctuations of a sample
that starts as a condensate of N atoms in a pure F=1, m_F = 0 state are
described in analogy to the `two-mode squeezing' of quantum optics in terms of
an su(1,1) algebra. In this system the initial m_F=0 condensate acts as a
source (`pump') for the creation pairs of m_F =+1,-1 atoms. We show that even
though the system as a whole is described by a pure state with zero entropy,
the reduced density matrix for the m_F = +1 degree of freedom, obtained by
tracing out the m_F = -1,0 degrees of freedom, corresponds to a thermal state.
Furthermore, these quantum fluctuations of the initial dynamics of the system
provide the seeds for the formation of domains of ferromagnetically aligned
spins.

In spite of the fact that statistical predictions of quantum theory (QT) can
only be tested if large amount of data is available a claim has been made that
QT provides the most complete description of an individual physical system.
Einstein's opposition to this claim and the paradox he presented in the article
written together with Podolsky and Rosen in 1935 inspired generations of
physicists in their quest for better understanding of QT. Seventy years after
EPR article it is clear that without deep understanding of the character and
limitations of QT one may not hope to find a meaningful unified theory of all
physical interactions, manipulate qubits or construct a quantum computer. In
this paper we present shortly the EPR paper and the discussion which followed
it. By emphasizing the difference between quantum phenomena and hypothetical
invisible sub phenomena we show that paradoxes are only found if incorrect
models of sub phenomena are used. The violation of Bell and CHSH inequalities
demonstrate clearly that "an entangled pair of photons" resembles neither "a
pair of Bertlmann's socks" nor "a pair of fair and random dices". Finally we
rephrase the EPR question by asking whether QT provides the complete
description of experimental data.

We investigate the influence of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) on the
properties of immersed impurity atoms, which are trapped in an optical lattice.
Assuming a weak coupling of the impurity atoms to the BEC, we derive a quantum
master equation for the lattice system. In the special case of fixed impurities
with two internal states the atoms represent a quantum register and the quantum
master equation reproduces the exact evolution of the qubits. We characterise
the qubit dephasing which is caused by the interspecies coupling and show that
the effect of sub- and superdecoherence is observable for realistic
experimental parameters. Furthermore, the BEC phonons mediate an attractive
interaction between the impurities, which has an important impact on their
spatial distribution. If the lattice atoms are allowed to move, there occurs a
sharp transition with the impurities aggregating in a macroscopic cluster at
experimentally achievable temperatures. We also investigate the impact of the
BEC on the transport properties of the impurity atoms and show that a crossover
from coherent to diffusive behaviour occurs with increasing interaction
strength.
