Title: Stabilizing a purely dipolar quantum gas against collapse

   We report on the experimental observation of the dipolar collapse of a
quantum gas which sets in when we reduce the contact interaction below some
critical value using a Feshbach resonance. Due to the anisotropy of the
dipole-dipole interaction, the stability of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate
depends not only on the strength of the contact interaction, but also on the
trapping geometry. We investigate the stability diagram and find good agreement
with a universal stability threshold arising from a simple theoretical model.
Using a pancake-shaped trap with the dipoles oriented along the short axis of
the trap, we are able to tune the scattering length to zero, stabilizing a
purely dipolar quantum gas.

Title: Superfluid Fermi-Fermi mixture: phase diagram, stability, and soliton
   formation

   We study the phase diagram for a dilute Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superfluid
Fermi-Fermi mixture (of distinct mass) at zero temperature using energy
densities for the superfluid fermions in one (1D), two (2D), and three (3D)
dimensions. We also derive the dynamical time-dependent nonlinear
Euler-Lagrange equation satisfied by the mixture in one dimension using this
energy density. We obtain the linear stability conditions for the mixture in
terms of fermion densities of the components and the interspecies Fermi-Fermi
interaction. In equilibrium there are two possibilities. The first is that of a
uniform mixture of the two components, the second is that of two pure phases of
two components without any overlap between them. In addition, a mixed and a
pure phase, impossible in 1D and 2D, can be created in 3D. We also obtain the
conditions under which the uniform mixture is stable from an energetic
consideration. The same conditions are obtained from a modulational instability
analysis of the dynamical equations in 1D. Finally, the 1D dynamical equations
for the system are solved numerically and by variational approximation (VA) to
study the bright solitons of the system for attractive interspecies Fermi-Fermi
interaction in 1D. The VA is found to yield good agreement to the numerical
result for the density profile and chemical potential of the bright solitons.
The bright solitons are demonstrated to be dynamically stable. The experimental
realization of these Fermi-Fermi bright solitons seems possible with present
setups.

   A special vapour cell has been built, that allows the measurement of the
atom-surface van der Waals interaction exerted by a CaF2 window at the
interface with Cs vapour. Mechanical and thermal fragility of fluoride windows
make common designs of vapour cells unpractical, so that we have developed an
all-sapphire sealed cell with an internal CaF2 window. Although impurities were
accidentally introduced when filling-up the prototype cell, leading to a
line-broadening and shift, the selective reflection spectrum on the Cs D1 line
(894 nm) makes apparent the weak van der Waals surface interaction. The
uncertainties introduced by the effects of these impurities in the van der
Waals measurement are nearly eliminated when comparing the selective reflection
signal at the CaF2 interface of interest, and at a sapphire window of the same
cell. The ratio of the interaction respectively exerted by a sapphire interface
and a CaF2 interface is found to be 0.55 $\pm$ 0.25, in good agreement with the
theoretical evaluation of ~0.67.

   We develop a pairing mean-field theory to describe the quantum dynamics of
the dissociation of molecular Bose-Einstein condensates into their constituent
bosonic or fermionic atoms. We apply the theory to one, two, and
three-dimensional geometries and analyze the role of dimensionality on the atom
production rate as a function of the dissociation energy. As well as
determining the populations and coherences of the atoms, we calculate the
correlations that exist between atoms of opposite momenta, including the column
density correlations in 3D systems. We compare the results with those of the
undepleted molecular field approximation and argue that the latter is most
reliable in fermionic systems and in lower dimensions. In the bosonic case we
compare the pairing mean-field results with exact calculations using the
positive-$P$ stochastic method and estimate the range of validity of the
pairing mean-field theory. Comparisons with similar first-principle simulations
in the fermionic case are currently not available, however, we argue that the
range of validity of the present approach should be broader for fermions than
for bosons in the regime where Pauli blocking prevents complete depletion of
the molecular condensate.

the object plane can thus be transformed into atomic Raman coherence according
to the idea of ``light storage''. We investigate how the stored diffraction
pattern evolves under diffusion. Our result indicates, under appropriate
conditions, that an image can be reconstructed with high fidelity. The main

components of the diffraction pattern interfere destructively.

   We study an ultracold gas of neutral atoms subject to the periodic optical
potential generated by a high-$Q$ cavity mode. In the limit of very low
temperatures, cavity field and atomic dynamics require a quantum description.
Starting from a cavity QED single atom Hamiltonian we use different routes to
derive approximative multiparticle Hamiltonians in Bose-Hubbard form with
rescaled or even dynamical parameters. In the limit of large enough cavity
damping the different models agree. Compared to free space optical lattices,
quantum uncertainties of the potential and the possibility of atom-field
entanglement lead to modified phase transition characteristics, the appearance
of new phases or even quantum superpositions of different phases. Using a
corresponding effective master equation, which can be numerically solved for
few particles, we can study time evolution including dissipation. As an example
we exhibit the microscopic processes behind the transition dynamics from a Mott
insulator like state to a self-ordered superradiant state of the atoms, which
appears as steady state for transverse atomic pumping.

Title: Transport of strong-coupling polarons in optical lattices

   We study the transport of ultracold impurity atoms immersed in a
Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and trapped in a tight optical lattice. Within
the strong-coupling regime, we derive an extended Hubbard model describing the
dynamics of the impurities in terms of polarons, i.e. impurities dressed by a
coherent state of Bogoliubov phonons. Using a generalized master equation based
on this microscopic model we show that inelastic and dissipative phonon
scattering results in (i) a crossover from coherent to incoherent transport of
impurities with increasing BEC temperature and (ii) the emergence of a net
atomic current across a tilted optical lattice. The dependence of the atomic
current on the lattice tilt changes from ohmic conductance to negative
differential conductance within an experimentally accessible parameter regime.
This transition is accurately described by an Esaki-Tsu-type relation with the
effective relaxation time of the impurities as a temperature-dependent
parameter.

Title: Scanning Superfluid-Turbulence Cascade by Its Low-Temperature Cutoff

Kolmogorov cascade into the Kelvin-wave cascade, we develop a theory of
low-temperature cutoff. The theory predicts a specific behavior of the
quantized vortex line density, $L$, controlled by the frictional coefficient,
$\alpha(T) \ll 1$, responsible for the cutoff. The curve $\ln L(\ln \alpha)$ is
found to directly reflect the structure of the cascade, revealing four
qualitatively distinct wavenumber regions. Excellent agreement with recent
experiment by Walmsley {\it et al.} [arXiv:0710.1033]--in which $L(T)$ has been
measured down to $T \sim 0.08 $K--implies that the scenario of low-temperature
superfluid turbulence is now experimentally validated, and allows to quantify
the Kelvin-wave cascade spectrum.

Title: Damping of Condensate Oscillation of a Trapped Bose Gas in a

   We study damping of a dipole oscillation in a Bose-Condensed gas in a
combined cigar-shaped harmonic trap and one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice

Gross-Pitaeavskii equation and the Bogoliubov equations. We use the Popov
approximation to calculate the temperature dependence of the condensate
fraction with varying lattice depth. We then calculate the Landau damping rate
of a dipole oscillation as a function of the lattice depth and temperature. The
damping rate increases with increasing lattice depth, which is consistent with
experimental observations. The magnitude of the damping rate is in reasonable
agreement with experimental data. We also find that the damping rate has a
strong temperature dependence, showing a sharp increase with increasing
temperature. Finally, we emphasize the importance of the radial thermal
excitations in both equilibrium properties and the Landau damping.
