Title: Phonon background versus analogue Hawking radiation in Bose-Einstein
   condensates
Authors: S. Wuester
Categories: cond-mat.other gr-qc
\\
We determine the feasibility of detecting analogue Hawking radiation in a
Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of atom loss induced heating. We find
that phonons created by three-body losses overshadow those due to analogue
Hawking radiation. To overcome this problem, three-body losses may have to be
suppressed, for example as proposed by Search et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92
140401 (2004)]. The reduction of losses to a few percent of their normal rate
is typically sufficient to suppress the creation of loss phonons on the time
scale of a fast analogue Hawking phonon detection.

Title: Dissipation-driven quantum phase transitions in collective spin systems
Authors: S. Morrison and A. S. Parkins
Categories: quant-ph
\\
We consider two different collective spin systems subjected to strong
dissipation -- on the same scale as interaction strengths and external fields
-- and show that either continuous or discontinuous dissipative quantum phase
transitions can occur as the dissipation strength is varied. First, we consider
a well known model of cooperative resonance fluorescence that can exhibit a
second-order quantum phase transition, and analyze the entanglement properties
near the critical point. Next, we examine a dissipative version of the
Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick interacting collective spin model, where we find that
either first- or second-order quantum phase transitions can occur, depending
only on the ratio of the interaction and external field parameters. We give
detailed results and interpretation for the steady state entanglement in the
vicinity of the critical point, where it reaches a maximum. For the first-order
transition we find that the semiclassical steady states exhibit a region of
bistability and we show that homodyne spectra of the system provide a clear
signature of this behaviour.

Title: QND measurements and state preparation in quantum gases by light
   detection
Authors: Igor B. Mekhov, Helmut Ritsch
Categories: quant-ph
\\
We consider light scattering from ultracold atoms trapped in an optical
lattice into a cavity. The measurement of photons leaking out the cavity
provides a quantum nondemolition (QND) access to various atomic variables.
Depending on the chosen geometry the time resolved light detection projects the
atomic quantum state to various atom-number squeezed and Schroedinger cat
states. Modifications of the atomic and light properties at a single quantum
trajectory are demonstrated. The quantum structure of final states can be
revealed by further observations of the same sample.

Title: Solids and supersolids of three-body interacting polar molecules in an
   optical lattice
Authors: Kai P. Schmidt, Julien Dorier, Andreas Laeuchli

\\
We study the physics of cold polar molecules loaded into an optical lattice
in the regime of strong three-body interactions, as put forward recently by
B\"uchler [Nat. Phys. 3, 726 (2007)]. To this end quantum Monte Carlo
simulations, exact diagonalization and a semiclassical approach are used to
explore hardcore bosons on the two-dimensional square lattice which interact
solely by long ranged three-body terms. The resulting phase diagram shows a
sequence of solid and supersolid phases. Our findings are directly relevant for
future experimental implementations and open a new route towards the discovery
of a lattice supersolid phase in experiment.

Title: Maximizing the Neel temperature of fermions in a simple-cubic optical
   lattice
Authors: C.J.M. Mathy and David A. Huse
Categories: cond-mat.str-el
\\
For a simple-cubic optical lattice with lattice spacing d, occupied by two
species of fermionic atoms of mass m that interact repulsively, we ask what
conditions maximize the Neel temperature in the Mott insulating phase at
density one atom per site, with equal numbers of the two species. This maximum
occurs near the edge of the regime where the system is well-approximated by the
usual Hubbard model. The correction to the Hubbard-model approximation that
produces a ``direct'' ferromagnetic interaction between atoms in
nearest-neighbor Wannier orbitals is the leading term that limits how high the
Neel temperature can be made.

Title: Breathing mode frequencies of a rotating Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC
   crossover region
Authors: Theja N. De Silva
Categories: cond-mat.other
\\
We study the breathing mode frequencies of a rotating Fermi gas trapped in a
harmonic plus radial quartic potential. We find that as the radial
anharmonicity increases, the lowest order radial mode frequency increases while
the next lowest order radial mode frequency decreases. Then at a critical
anharmonicity, these two modes merge and beyond this merge the cloud is
unstable against the oscillations. The critical anharmonicity depends on both
rotational frequency and the chemical potential. As a result of the large
chemical potential in the BCS regime, even with a weak anharmonicity the lowest
order mode frequency increases with decreasing the attractive interaction. For
large enough anharmonicities in the weak coupling BCS limit, we find that the
excitation of the breathing mode frequencies make the atomic cloud unstable.

We demonstrate a novel coherent optical medium with high optical depth and
low Doppler broadening that offers metastable states with low collisional and
motional decoherence. In our approach, helium buffer gas cools 87Rb atoms to
below 7 K, while at the same time slowing atom diffusion. We demonstrate that
electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) allows 50% transmission in a
medium with initial OD > 70. Slow pulse propagation experiments in this medium
yield delays exceeding initial pulse duration by a factor > 25. Efficient
four-wave mixing is observed in the high-OD regime, resulting in a pronounced
modification of the atomic optical response.

The quantum optical response of high density ultracold atomic systems is
critical to a wide range of fundamentally and technically important physical
processes. These include quantum image storage, optically based quantum
repeaters and ultracold molecule formation. We present here a microscopic
analysis of the light scattering on such a system, and we compare it with a
corresponding description based on macroscopic Maxwell theory. Results are
discussed in the context of the spectral resonance structure, time-dependent
response, and the light localization problem.

Title: D-anyons: one-dimensional anyons with competing $\delta$-function and

Authors: M. T. Batchelor, X.-W. Guan and A. Kundu

\\
We propose an exactly solvable model of anyons confined to one dimension with
competing $\delta$-function and derivative $\delta$-function interaction
potentials. The Bethe ansatz equations are derived in terms of the $N$-particle
sector for the quantum anyonic field model of the generalized derivative
nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation. This more general anyon model exhibits
richer physics than that of the recently studied one-dimensional model of
$\delta$-function interacting anyons. We show that the anyonic signature is
inextricably related to the velocities of the colliding particles and the
pairwise dynamical interaction between particles.

Title: Atom Chip Diffraction of Bose-Einstein Condensates: The Role of
   Inter-Atomic Interactions
Authors: T. E. Judd, R. G. Scott, T. M. Fromhold
Categories: cond-mat.other
\\
We use supercomputer simulations to show that inter-atomic interactions can
strongly affect the phase evolution of Bose-Einstein condensates that are
diffracted from atom chips, thereby explaining recent experiments. Interactions
broaden and depopulate non-central diffraction orders, meaning that the
experiments cannot be fully described by non-interacting theories.
Consequently, interferometers that use many interacting atoms to enhance
sensitivity are highly nonlinear devices requiring complex calibration. We
identify device geometries required to approximate non-interacting behavior.

Optical nonlinearities typically require macroscopic media, thereby making
their implementation at the quantum level an outstanding challenge. Here we
demonstrate a nonlinearity for one atom enclosed by two highly reflecting
mirrors. We send laser light through the input mirror and record the light from
the output mirror of the cavity. For weak laser intensity, we find the
vacuum-Rabi resonances. But for higher intensities, we find an additional
resonance. It originates from the fact that the cavity can accommodate only an
integer number of photons and that this photon number determines the
characteristic frequencies of the coupled atom-cavity system. We selectively
excite such a frequency by depositing at once two photons into the system and
find a transmission which increases with the laser intensity squared. The
nonlinearity differs from classical saturation nonlinearities and is direct
spectroscopic proof of the quantum nature of the atom-cavity system. It
provides a photon-photon interaction by means of one atom, and constitutes a
step towards a two-photon gateway or a single-photon transistor.

\\
One of the most fascinating experimental achievements of the last decade was
the realization of Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) of ultra-cold atoms in
optical lattices (OL's). The extraordinary level of control over these
structures allows us to investigate complex solid state phenomena and the
emerging field of ``atomtronics'' promises a new generation of nanoscale
devices. It is therefore of fundamental and technological importance to
understand their dynamical properties. Here we study the outgoing atomic flux
of BECs loaded in an one-dimensional OL with leaking edges, using a mean field
description provided by the Discrete Non-Linear Schrodinger Equation (DNLSE).
We demonstrate that the atom population inside the OL decays in avalanches of
size $J$. For intermediate values of the interatomic interaction strength their
distribution ${\cal P}(J)$ follows a power law i.e. ${\cal
P}(J)\sim1/J^{\alpha}$ characterizing systems at phase transition. This scale
free behaviour of ${\cal P}(J)$ reflects the complexity and the hierarchical
structure of the underlying classical mixed phase space. Our results are
relevant in a variety of contexts (whenever DNLSE is adequate), most
prominently the light emmitance from coupled non-linear optics waveguides.

Title: Ground-state properties of one-dimensional anyon gases
Authors: Yajiang Hao, Yunbo Zhang, Shu Chen
Categories: cond-mat.str-el cond-mat.stat-mech
Comments: 6 pages, 5 figures
\\
We investigate the ground state of the one-dimensional interacting anyonic
system based on the exact Bethe ansatz solution for arbitrary coupling constant
($0\leq c\leq \infty$) and statistics parameter ($0\leq \kappa \leq \pi$). It
is shown that the density of state in quasi-momentum $k$ space and the ground
state energy are determined by the renormalized coupling constant $c'$. The
effect induced by the statistics parameter $\kappa$ exhibits in the momentum
distribution in two aspects: Besides the effect of renormalized coupling, the
anyonic statistics results in the nonsymmetric momentum distribution when the
statistics parameter $\kappa$ deviates from 0 (Bose statistics) and $\pi$
(Fermi statistics) for any coupling constant $c$. The momentum distribution
evolves from a Bose distribution to a Fermi one as $\kappa$ varies from 0 to
$\pi$.

harmonic confinement interacting through short-range two-body potentials with
diverging s-wave scattering length. Using the fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo
method, the energies of the "normal state" are determined as functions of the
