Title: Pair formation and collapse in imbalanced Fermion populations with
   unequal masses
Authors: G. G. Batrouni, M. J. Wolak, F. Hebert, V. G. Rousseau
Categories: cond-mat.other
\\
We present an exact Quantum Monte Carlo study of the effect of unequal masses
on pair formation in Fermionic systems with population imbalance loaded into
optical lattices. We have considered three forms of the attractive interaction
and find in all cases that the system is unstable and collapses as the mass
difference increases and that the ground state becomes an inhomogeneous
collapsed state. We also address the question of canonical vs grand canonical
ensemble and its role, if any, in stabilizing certain phases.

Title: Kinetics of the Bose-Einstein Condensation
Authors: Herbert Spohn
Categories: cond-mat.mes-hall cond-mat.other
Comments: 19 pages
\\
We study the bosonic Boltzmann-Nordheim kinetic equation, which describes the
kinetic regime of weakly interacting bosons with s-wave scattering only. We
consider a spatially homogeneous fluid with an isotropic momentum distribution.
The issue of the dynamical formation of a Bose-Einstein condensate has been
studied extensively. We supply here the completed equations of motion for the
coupled system, the energy density distribution of the normal fluid and the
density of the condensate. With this information the post-nucleation
self-similar solution is investigated in more detail than before.

Title: Condensation of ideal quantum Boltzmann gas
Authors: Jeong-Hyuck Park and Sang-Woo Kim
Categories: cond-mat.stat-mech cond-mat.other

\\
We investigate for any emergent statistical properties of ideal quantum
Boltzmann gas confined in a box. After obtaining an exact formula of the
canonical partition function, we perform numerical evaluation, up to the number
of particles ten thousands. We show that the system features a boil-like
first-order phase transition when there are more than roughly 8000 particles:
the phase transition accompanies an abrupt volume expansion and reveals
superheating/supercooling phenomenon. We derive a vapor pressure versus
temperature equation and comment on the relevance of our model to some
empirical data of helium.

Title: Decoherence in Solid State Qubits

Interaction of solid state qubits with environmental degrees of freedom
strongly affects the qubit dynamics, and leads to decoherence. In quantum
information processing with solid state qubits, decoherence significantly
limits the performances of such devices. Therefore, it is necessary to fully
understand the mechanisms that lead to decoherence. In this review we discuss
how decoherence affects two of the most successful realizations of solid state
qubits, namely, spin-qubits and superconducting qubits. In the former, the
qubit is encoded in the spin 1/2 of the electron, and it is implemented by
confining the electron spin in a semiconductor quantum dot. Superconducting
devices show quantum behavior at low temperatures, and the qubit is encoded in
the two lowest energy levels of a superconducting circuit. The electron spin in
a quantum dot has two main decoherence channels, a (Markovian) phonon-assisted
relaxation channel, due to the presence of a spin-orbit interaction, and a
(non-Markovian) spin bath constituted by the spins of the nuclei in the quantum
dot that interact with the electron spin via the hyperfine interaction. In a
superconducting qubit, decoherence takes place as a result of fluctuations in
the control parameters, such as bias currents, applied flux, and bias voltages,
and via losses in the dissipative circuit elements.

Title: Thermodynamics of ultracold trapped gases. Generalized mechanical
variables, equation of state and heat capacity
Authors: Nadia Sandoval-Figueroa and V\'{\i}ctor Romero-Roch\'{\i}n
Categories: cond-mat.stat-mech
\\
The thermodynamics framework of an interacting quantum gas trapped by an
arbitrary external potential is reviewed. We show that for each confining
potential, in the thermodynamic limit, there emerge "generalized" volume and
pressure variables ${\cal V}$ and ${\cal P}$, that replace the usual volume and
hydrostatic pressure of a uniform system. This scheme is validated with the
derivation of the virial expansion of the grand potential. We show that this
approach yields experimentally amenable procedures to find the equation of
state of the fluid, ${\cal P} = {\cal P}({\cal V}/N,T)$ with $N$ the number of
atoms, as well as its heat capacity at constant generalized volume $C_{\cal V}
= C_{\cal V}({\cal V},N,T)$. With these two functions, all the thermodynamics
properties of the system may be found. As specific examples we study weakly
interacting Bose gases trapped by harmonic and by linear quadrupolar potentials
within the Hartree-Fock approximation. Comparisons with experimental results of
a $^{23}$Na ultracold gas are also presented. We claim that this route should
provide an additional and useful tool to analyze both the thermodynamic
variables of a trapped gas as well as its elementary excitations.

Title: Reconnection of superfluid vortex bundles
Authors: Sultan Z. Alamri, Anthony J. Youd and Carlo F. Barenghi

\\
Using the vortex filament model and the Gross Pitaevskii nonlinear
Schroedinger equation, we show that bundles of quantised vortex lines in helium
II are structurally robust and can reconnect with each other maintaining their
identity. We discuss vortex stretching in superfluid turbulence and show that,
during the bundle reconnection process, Kelvin waves of large amplitude are
generated, in agreement with the finding that helicity is produced by nearly
singular vortex interactions in classical Euler flows.

Title: Excitation Spectrum and Stability from a Filled Landau Level in Rotating
   Dipolar Fermi Gases
Authors: Szu-Cheng Cheng
Categories: cond-mat.mes-hall
\\
We apply the equation-of-motion method to study the collective excitation
spectrum from a filled Landau level in rotating dipolar Fermi gases. The
predicted excitation spectrum of rotating dipolar Fermi gases can exhibit a
roton-minimum character. This roton character is tunable by varying the dipole
interaction strength and confining potential. An increase of the dipole
interaction strength makes the roton minimum becoming zero, and the system
becomes unstable. We also obtain a condition for the dynamical stability of
rotating dipolar Fermi gases.

By using a close similarity between multi-photon and tunneling population
transfer schemes, we propose robust adiabatic methods for the transport of
Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in double- and triple-well traps. The
calculations within the mean-field approximation (Gross-Pitaevskii equation)
show that irreversible and complete transport takes place even in the presence
of the non-linear effects caused by interaction between BEC atoms. The transfer
is driven by adiabatic time-dependent monitoring the barriers and well depths.
The proposed methods are universal and can be applied to a variety of systems
and scenarios.

error probability is a fundamental task in quantum measurement theory as well
as an important primitive in optical communication. In this work, we propose

than can be obtained using the standard measurement devices; the Kennedy

Using a non-selective broadband detection scheme we discovered an efficient
mechanism of formation of ultracold Cs$_2$ molecules in deeply bound levels
($v=1-9$) of their electronic ground state X$^1 \Sigma_g^+$. They are formed by
a one-photon photoassociation of ultracold cesium atoms in a manifold of
excited electronic states, followed by a two-step spontaneous emission cascade.
We were able to form about $10^5-10^6$ molecules per second in these low
vibrational levels of the ground state. This detection scheme could be
generalized to other molecular species for the systematic investigation of cold
molecule formation mechanisms.

\\
Recently, coherent two-particle dynamics with ultracold bosonic atoms in an
optical superlattice of isolated double wells were realized experimentally [1,
2]. The next step is to observe coherent many-particle dynamics after coupling
the double wells. To this purpose, we provide numerical results obtained by the
density-matrix renormalization-group method. Our particular setup with bosonic
atoms in two different hyperfine states realizes in a certain parameter regime
actually the physics of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg magnet, describing the second
order hopping processes. Tuning of the superlattice allows for controlling the
effect of fast first order processes versus the slower second order ones. We
provide the evolution of typical experimentally available observables. The
validity of the description via the Heisenberg model, depending on the
parameters of the Hubbard model, is studied numerically and analytically.
Contrary to the case of isolated double wells, relaxation of local observables
can be observed. The tunability between the Bose-Hubbard model and the
Heisenberg model in this setup could be used to study experimentally the
differences in equilibration processes for nonintegrable and Bethe ansatz
integrable models. We show that the relaxation in the Heisenberg model is
connected to a phase averaging effect, which is in contrast to the typical
scattering driven thermalization in nonintegrable models. We discuss the
preparation of magnetic groundstates by adiabatic tuning of the superlattice
parameters.

Authors: R. B. Mann, M. B. Young, I. Fuentes-Schuller

\\
It has recently been discovered that for certain rates of mode-exchange
collisions analytic solutions can be found for a Hamiltonian describing the
two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate. We proceed to study the behavior of the
system using perturbation theory if the coupling constants only approximately
match these parameter constraints. We find that the model is robust to such
perturbations. We study the effects of degeneracy on the perturbations and find
that the induced changes differ greatly from the non-degenerate case. We also
model inelastic collisions that result in particle loss or condensate decay as
external perturbations and use this formalism to examine the effects of
three-body recombination and background collisions.

Title: Entangled light from Bose-Einstein condensates
Authors: H. T. Ng and S. Bose
Categories: quant-ph
Comments: 5 pages and 5 figures
\\
We propose a method to generate entangled light with a Bose-Einstein
condensate trapped in a cavity, a system realized in recent experiments. The
atoms of the condensate are trapped in a periodic potential generated by a
cavity mode. The condensate is continuously pumped by a laser and spontaneously
emits a pair of photons of different frequencies in two distinct cavity modes.
In this way, the condensate mediates entanglement between two cavity modes
which leak out and can be separated and exhibit continuous variable
entanglement. The scheme exploits the experimentally demonstrated strong,
steady and collective coupling of condensate atoms to a cavity field.

Title: Lifshitz theory of atom-wall interaction with applications to quantum

\\
The Casimir-Polder interaction of an atom with a metallic wall is
investigated in the framework of the Lifshitz theory. It is demonstrated that
in some temperature (separation) region the Casimir-Polder entropy takes
negative values and goes to zero when the temperature vanishes. This result is
obtained both for an ideal metal wall and for real metal walls. Simple
analytical representations for the Casimir-Polder free energy and force are
also obtained. These results are used to make a comparison between the
phenomenological potential used in the theoretical description of quantum
reflection and exact atom-wall interaction energy, as given by the Lifshitz
theory. Computations are performed for the atom of metastable He${}^{\ast}$
interacting with metal (Au) and dielectric (Si) walls. It is shown that the
relative differences between the exact and phenomenological interaction
energies are smaller in the case of a metallic wall. This is explained by the
effect of negative entropy which occurs only for a metal wall. More accurate
atom-wall interaction energies computed here can be used for the interpretation
of measurement data in the experiments on quantum reflection.

Title: Finite Temperature Models of Bose-Einstein Condensation

for studying weakly-interacting atomic Bose-Einstein condensates written at
an elementary level suitable for non-experts in this area (e.g. starting PhD
students) - to appear in J Phys B
\\
The theoretical description of trapped weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein
condensates is characterized by a large number of seemingly very different
approaches which have been developed over the course of time by researchers
with very distinct backgrounds. Newcomers to this field, experimentalists and
young researchers all face a considerable challenge in navigating through the
`maze' of abundant theoretical models, and simple correspondences between
existing approaches are not always very transparent. This Tutorial provides a
generic introduction to such theories, in an attempt to single out common
features and deficiencies of certain `classes of approaches' identified by
their physical content, rather than their particular mathematical
implementation.
This Tutorial is structured in a manner accessible to a non-specialist with a
good working knowledge of quantum mechanics. Although some familiarity with
concepts of quantum field theory would be an advantage, key notions such as the
occupation number representation of second quantization are nonetheless briefly
reviewed. Following a general introduction, the complexity of models is
gradually built up, starting from the basic zero-temperature formalism of the
Gross-Pitaevskii equation. This structure enables readers to probe different
levels of theoretical developments (mean-field, number-conserving and
stochastic) according to their particular needs. In addition to its `training
element', we hope that this Tutorial will prove useful to active researchers in
this field, both in terms of the correspondences made between different
theoretical models, and as a source of reference for existing and developing
finite-temperature theoretical models.

Title: Spontaneous Emission in ultra-cold spin-polarised anisotropic Fermi Seas
Authors: Brian O'Sullivan and Thomas Busch
Categories: quant-ph
\\
We examine and explain the spatial emission patterns of ultracold excited
fermions in anisotropic trapping potentials in the presence of a spin polarised
Fermi sea of ground state atoms. Due to the Pauli principle, the Fermi sea
modifies the available phase space for the recoiling atom and thereby modifies
its decay rate and the probability of the emitted photon's direction. We show
that the spatial anisotropies are due to an intricate interplay between Fermi
energies and degeneracy values of specific energy levels and identify a regime
in which the emission will become completely directional. Our results are
relevant for recent advances in trapping and manipulating cold fermionic
samples experimentally and give an example of a conceptually new idea for a
directional photon source.

Authors: Christiane P. Koch, Robert Moszynski

\\
We propose an improved photoassociation scheme to produce ultracold molecules
in their vibronic ground state for the generic case where non-adiabatic effects
facilitating transfer to deeply bound levels are absent. Formation of molecules
is achieved by short laser pulses in a Raman-like pump-dump process where an
additional near-infrared laser field couples the excited state to an auxiliary
state. The coupling due to the additional field effectively changes the shape
of the excited state potential and allows for efficient population transfer to
low-lying vibrational levels of the electronic ground state. Repetition of many
pump-dump sequences together with collisional relaxation allows for
accumulation of molecules in v=0.

It is shown that bifurcations of the mean-field dynamics of a Bose-Einstein
condensate can be related with the quantum phase transitions of the original
many-body system. As an example we explore the inter-band tunneling in the
two-dimensional optical lattice. Such a system allows for easy control by the
lattice depth as well as for macroscopic visualization of the phase transition.
The system manifests switching between two self-trapping states or from a
self-trapping state to a superposition of the macroscopically populated
self-trapping states with the step-like variation of the control parameter
about the bifurcation point. We have also observed the magnification of the
microscopic difference between the even and odd number of atoms to a
macroscopically distinguishable dynamics of the system.

We present the exact Bethe ansatz solution for the two-dimensional BCS
pairing Hamiltonian with p_x + i p_y symmetry. From the exact solution we
obtain the full phase diagram parameterized by the filling fraction and the
coupling constant. It consists of three phases denoted weak coupling BCS, weak
pairing and strong pairing. The first two phases are separated by a line where
the exact ground state is given by the Moore-Read pfaffian state, while the
other two phases are separated by the critical line previously found by Read
and Green. We establish a duality relation between the weak and strong pairing
phases, whereby ground states of the weak phase are ``dressed'' versions of the
ground states of the strong phase by zero energy (Moore-Read) pairs.

For a non-interacting Bose gas on a lattice we compute the shift of the
critical temperature for condensation when random-bond and onsite disorder are
present. We evidence that the shift depends on the space dimensionality D and
the filling fraction f. For D -> infinity (infinite-range model), using results
from the theory of random matrices, we show that the shift of the critical
temperature is negative, depends on f, and vanishes only for large f. The
connections with analogous results obtained for the spherical model are
discussed. For D=3 we find that, for large f, the critical temperature T_c is
enhanced by disorder and that the relative shift does not sensibly depend on f;
at variance, for small f, T_c decreases in agreement with the results obtained
for a Bose gas in the continuum. We provide numerical estimates for the shift
of the critical temperature due to disorder induced on a non-interacting Bose
gas by a bichromatic incommensurate potential.

\\
The calculation of the heating rate of cold atoms in vibrating traps requires
a theory that goes beyond the Kubo linear response formulation. If a ``strong
quantum chaos'' assumption does not hold, the analysis of transitions shows
similarities with a percolation problem in energy space. We show how the
texture and the sparsity of the perturbation matrix, as determined by the
geometry of the system, dictate the result. An improved sparse random matrix
model is introduced: it captures the essential ingredients of the problem, and
leads to a generalized variable range hopping picture.
