Title: Pure Quantum Correlations Between Bright Optical Beams

of light have been experimentally demonstrated. By measuring the visibility of
the interference fringes and the correlation variances of amplitude and phase
quadratures between a pair of bright twin optical beams with different
frequencies produced from a non-degenerate optical parametric oscillator, we
found that when classical interference became worse even vanished, the
quadrature quantum correlations were not influenced, completely. The presented
experiment obviously shows the quantum correlations of light do not necessarily
imply the classical coherence.

Title: Transient dynamics and momentum redistribution in cold atoms via
   recoil-induced resonances

   We use an optically dense, anisotropic magneto-optical trap to study
recoil-induced resonances (RIRs) in the transient, high-gain regime. We find
that two distinct mechanisms govern the atomic dynamics: the finite,
frequency-dependent atomic response time, and momentum-space population
redistribution. At low input probe intensities, the residual Doppler width of
the atoms, combined with the finite atomic response time, result in a linear,
transient hysteretic effect that modifies the locations, widths, and magnitudes
of the resulting gain spectra depending on the sign of the scan chirp. When
larger intensities (\textit{i.e.}, greater than a few $\mu$W/cm$^2$) are
incident on the atomic sample for several $\mu$s, hole-burning in the atomic
sample's momentum distribution leads to a coherent population redistribution
that persists for approximately 100 $\mu$s. We propose using RIRs to engineer
the atomic momentum distribution to enhance the nonlinear atom-photon coupling.
We present a numerical model, and compare the calculated and experimental
results to verify our interpretation.

Title: Ground state properties of a Tonks-Girardeau Gas in a periodic potential

   In this paper, we investigate the ground-state properties of a bosonic
Tonks-Girardeau gas confined in a one-dimensional periodic potential. The
single-particle reduced-density matrix is computed numerically for systems up
to N=41 bosons. Then we are able to study the scaling behavior of the
occupation numbers of the most dominant orbital for both commensurate and
non-commensurate cases, which correspond to an insulating phase and a
conducting phase, respectively. We find that, in the commensurate case, the
fractional occupation decays as $f_0 \propto 1/\ln N$ with the particle number,
while $f_0 \propto 1/N^{0.44}$ in the non-commensurate case. So there is no BEC
in both cases. The study of zero momentum peaks shows that $n(0)\propto N$ in
commensurate case, which implies that all bonons are localized in the
insulating phase.

Title: Critical properties of a trapped interacting Bose gas

estimate of the thermal length, the lengthscale over which full coherence
effectively exists (and beyond which power-law decay of correlations in a
two-dimensional condensate occurs), of the order of 5 micrometers. In addition,
the exponential decay of temporal coherence predicted for a finite size system
is consistent with that found in the experiment. From our analysis of the
luminescence spectra of the polariton condensate, taking into account pumping
and decay, we obtain a dispersionless region at small momenta of the order of 4
degrees. In addition, we determine the polariton linewidth as a function of the
pump power. Finally, we discuss how, by increasing the exciton-photon detuning,
it is in principle possible to move the threshold for condensation from a
region of the phase diagram where polaritons can be described as a weakly
interacting Bose gas to a region where instead the composite nature of
polaritons becomes important.

Title: Emergent Time Scale in Entangled Quantum Dynamics of Ultracold Molecules

   We derive a novel lattice Hamiltonian, the \emph{Molecular Hubbard
Hamiltonian} (MHH), which describes the essential many body physics of
closed-shell ultracold heteronuclear molecules in their absolute ground state
in a quasi-one-dimensional optical lattice. The MHH is explicitly
time-dependent, making a dynamic generalization of the concept of quantum phase
transitions necessary. Using the Time-Evolving Block Decimation (TEBD)
algorithm to study entangled dynamics, we demonstrate that, in the case of hard
core bosonic molecules at half filling, the MHH exhibits an emergent time scale
over which spatial entanglement grows, crystalline order appears, and
oscillations between rotational states self-damp into an asymptotic
superposition. We show that this time scale is a non-monotonic function of the
physical parameters describing the lattice. We also point out that experimental
mapping of the static phase boundaries of the MHH can be used to measure the
molecular polarizability tensor.

Title: A Stark decelerator on a chip

   A microstructured array of 1254 electrodes on a substrate has been configured
to generate an array of local minima of electric field strength with a
periodicity of 120 $\mu$m about 25 $\mu$m above the substrate. By applying
sinusoidally varying potentials to the electrodes, these minima can be made to
move smoothly along the array. Polar molecules in low-field seeking quantum
states can be trapped in these traveling potential wells. Recently, we
experimentally demonstrated this by transporting metastable CO molecules at
constant velocities above the substrate [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100 (2008) 153003].
Here, we outline and experimentally demonstrate how this microstructured array
can be used to decelerate polar molecules directly from a molecular beam. For
this, the sinusoidally varying potentials need to be switched on when the
molecules arrive above the chip, their frequency needs to be chirped down in
time, and they need to be switched off before the molecules leave the chip
again. Deceleration of metastable CO molecules from an initial velocity of 360
m/s to a final velocity as low as 240 m/s is demonstrated in the 15-35 mK deep
potential wells above the 5 cm long array of electrodes. This corresponds to a
deceleration of almost $10^5$ $g$, and about 85 cm$^{-1}$ of kinetic energy is
removed from the metastable CO molecules in this process.

Title: Superconductivity close to the Mott state: From condensed-matter systems
   to superfluidity in optical lattices

   Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in 1986 by Bednorz
and Mueller, great efforts have been devoted to finding out how and why it
works. From the d-wave symmetry of the order parameter, the importance of
antiferromagnetic fluctuations, and the presence of a mysterious pseudogap
phase close to the Mott state, one can conclude that high-Tc superconductors
are clearly distinguishable from the well-understood BCS superconductors. The
d-wave superconducting state can be understood through a Gutzwiller-type
projected BCS wave-function. In this review article, we revisit the Hubbard
model at half-filling and focus on the emergence of exotic superconductivity
with d-wave symmetry in the vicinity of the Mott state, starting from ladder
systems and then studying the dimensional crossovers to higher dimensions. This
allows to confirm that short-range antiferromagnetic fluctuations can mediate
superconductivity with d-wave symmetry. Ladders are also nice prototype systems
allowing to demonstrate the truncation of the Fermi surface and the emergence
of a Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) state with preformed pairs in the vicinity
of the Mott state. In two dimensions, a similar scenario emerges from
renormalization group arguments. We also discuss theoretical predictions for
the d-wave superconducting phase as well as the pseudogap phase, and address
the crossover to the overdoped regime. Finally, cold atomic systems with
tunable parameters also provide a complementary insight into this outstanding
problem.

Title: Energy landscapes and their relation to thermodynamic phase transitions

   In order to better understand the occurrence of phase transitions, we adopt
an approach based on the study of energy landscapes: The relation between
stationary points of the potential energy landscape of a classical
many-particle system and the analyticity properties of its thermodynamic
functions is studied for finite as well as infinite systems. For finite
systems, each stationary point is found to cause a nonanalyticity in the
microcanonical entropy, and the functional form of this nonanalytic term can be
derived explicitly. With increasing system size, the order of the nonanalytic
term grows unboundedly, leading to an increasing differentiability of the
entropy. Therefore, in the thermodynamic limit, only asymptotically flat
stationary points may cause a phase transition to take place. For several spin
models, these results are illustrated by predicting the absence or presence of
a phase transition from stationary points and their local curvatures in
microscopic configuration space. These results establish a relationship between
properties of energy landscapes and the occurrence of phase transitions. Such
an approach appears particularly promising for the simultaneous study of
dynamical and thermodynamical properties, as is of interest for example for
protein folding or the glass transition.

nonrelativistic limit, our results are consistent with well-known results. In

mechanically by Fock (number) states, are sent into interferometers, the
measurement of the output port at which the particles are detected provides a
binary measurement, with two possible results $\pm1$. With two interferometers
and two BEC's, the parity (product of all results obtained at each
interferometer) has all the features of an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen quantity,
with perfect correlations predicted by quantum mechanics when the settings
(phase shifts of the interferometers) are the same. When they are different,
significant violations of Bell inequalities are obtained. These violations do
not tend to zero when the number $N$ of particles increases, and can therefore
be obtained with arbitrarily large systems, but a condition is that all
particles should be detected. We discuss the general experimental requirements
for observing such effects, the necessary detection of all particles in
correlation, the role of the pixels of the CCD detectors, and that of the
alignments of the interferometers in terms of matching of the wave fronts of
the sources in the detection regions. Another scheme involving three
interferometers and three BEC's is discussed; it leads to Greenberger Horne
Zeilinger (GHZ) sign contradictions, as in the usual GHZ case with three
particles, but for an arbitrarily large number of them. Finally,
generalizations of the Hardy impossibilities to an arbitrarily large number of
particles are introduced. BEC's provide a large versality for observing
violations of local realism in a variety of experimental arrangements.

messenger bits that aid in quantum gate operations and mediate entanglement
between distant qubit atoms. Each atomic species is held in a separate optical
lattice and the atoms can be overlapped by translating the lattices with
respect to each other. When the messenger and qubit atoms are overlapped,
targeted single spin operations and entangling operations can be performed by
coupling the atomic states to a molecular state with radio-frequency pulses. By
controlling the frequency and duration of the radio-frequency pulses,
entanglement can either be created or swapped between a qubit messenger pair.
We estimate operation fidelities for entangling two distant qubits and discuss
scalability of this scheme and constraints on the optical lattice lasers.

   We derive an effective d-dimensional Hamiltonian for a system of
hard-core-bosons coupled to optical phonons in a lattice. Away from
half-filling, we show that the presence of next-nearest-neighbor hopping in the
effective Hamiltonian leads to a superfluid-to-supersolid transition at
intermediate boson-phonon (b-p) couplings, while at strong-couplings the system
phase separates. However, at half-filling and at a critical b-p coupling (as in
the xxz-model), the system undergoes a superfluid-to-charge-density-wave
transition without any signature of supersolidity. Our analyses is based on
extensive calculations of the structure factor, the superfluid fraction, the
Bose-Einstein condensate fraction, and the system energy at various fillings.
We present a phase diagram for this system and compare it to that of the
xxz-model. We also demonstrate explicitly that the next-nearest-neighbor
hopping (in the absence of nearest-neighbor hopping) in the effective
Hamiltonian leads only to a single transition, i.e., a first-order
superfluid-to-supersolid transition.
