derived by the path-integral method. In addition to the standard
Ginzburg-Landau equation, a second equation describing the total atom density
is obtained. These two coupled equations are necessary to describe both
homogeneous and inhomogeneous systems. The Ginzburg-Landau theory is valid near
the transition temperature $T_c$ on both sides of the crossover. In the
weakly-interacting BEC region, it is also accurate at zero temperature where
the Ginzburg-Landau equation can be mapped onto the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP)
equation. The applicability of GP equation at finite temperature is discussed.
On the BEC side, the fluctuation of the order parameter is studied and the
renormalization to the molecule coupling constant is obtained.

Title: Absence of Pressure-Driven Supersolid Flow at Low Frequency

  We have conducted a low frequency (0.002 Hz) search for evidence of a
pressure-driven supersolid response, finding a null result. Our results set an
upper bound on the low frequency AC supersolid flow velocity of $3.3 \times
10^{-3}$ nm/s and on the AC displacement of 0.26 nm, a value roughly the size
of the $^4$He atom, and less than typical torsional oscillator amplitude of a
few nm. These findings, combined with related DC measurements by Day and
Beamish, suggest either that supersolid flow cannot be generated by pressure
gradients, or that supersolidity is a frequency dependent phenomenon that is
clearly evident at several hundred Hz, but undetectably small at mHz
frequencies.

  We discuss the dynamics and thermodynamics of systems with weak long-range
interactions. Generically, these systems experience a violent collisionless
relaxation in the Vlasov regime leading to a (usually) non-Boltzmannian quasi
stationary state (QSS), followed by a slow collisional relaxation leading to
the Boltzmann statistical equilibrium state. These two regimes can be explained
by a kinetic theory, using an expansion of the BBGKY hierarchy in powers of
1/N, where N is the number of particles. We discuss the physical meaning of the
different functionals appearing in the analysis: the Boltzmann entropy, the
Lynden-Bell entropy, the "generalized" entropies arising in the reduced space
of coarse-grained distribution functions, the Tsallis entropy, the generalized
H-functions increasing during violent relaxation (not necessarily
monotonically) and the convex Casimir functionals used to settle the formal
nonlinear dynamical stability of steady states of the Vlasov equation. We show
the connection between the different variational problems associated with these
functionals. We also introduce a general class of nonlinear mean field
Fokker-Planck (NFP) equations that can be used as numerical algorithms to solve
these constrained optimization problems.

Title: Solitons and solitary vortices in "pancake"-shaped Bose-Einstein

  We study fundamental and vortical solitons in disk-morphed Bose-Einstein
condensates (BECs) subject to strong confinement along the axial direction.
Starting from the three-dimensional (3D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), we
proceed to an effective 2D nonpolynomial Schroeodinger equation (NPSE) derived
by means of the integration over the axial coordinate. Results produced by the
latter equation are in very good agreement with those obtained from the full 3D
GPE, including cases when the formal 2D equation with the cubic nonlinearity is
unreliable. The 2D NPSE is used to predict density profiles and dynamical
stability of repulsive and attractive BECs with zero and finite topological
charge in various planar trapping configurations, including the axisymmetric
harmonic confinement and 1D periodic potential. In particular, we find a stable
dynamical regime that was not reported before, viz., periodic splitting and
recombination of trapped vortices with topological charge 2 or 3 in the
self-attractive BEC.

Title: A supercritical superfluid and vortex unbinding following a quantum
  quench

  The technological advances of trapping and manipulating ultra-cold atom
systems provide an opportunity to study many-body dynamics with unprecedented
clarity. Here we study the dynamics of the relative phase of a bilayer of
two-dimensional superfluids after the two superfluids have been decoupled,
using truncated Wigner approximation. We find that on short time scales the
relative phase shows `light cone' like thermalization and creates a metastable
superfluid state, which can be supercritical. On longer time scales this state
relaxes to a disordered state due to dynamical vortex unbinding. This scenario
of dynamically suppressed vortex proliferation constitutes an anti-Kibble-Zurek
effect. Our predictions are directly measurable in interference experiments, as
demonstrated in Ref. 1.

Title: Thermal effects in light scattering from ultracold bosons in an optical

  The probability of a random walker to return to its starting point in
dimensions one and two is unity, a theorem first proven by G. Polya. The
recurrence probability -- the probability to be found at the origin at a time
t, is a power law with a critical exponent d/2 in dimensions d=1,2. We report
an experiment that directly measures the Laplace transform of the recurrence
probability in one dimension using Electromagnetically Induced Transparency
(EIT) of coherent atoms diffusing in a vapor-cell filled with buffer gas. We
find a regime where the limiting form of the complex EIT spectrum is universal
and only depends on the effective dimensionality in which the random recurrence
takes place. In an effective one-dimensional diffusion setting, the measured
spectrum exhibits power law dependence over two decades in the frequency domain
with a critical exponent of 0.56 close to the expected value 0.5. Possible
extensions to more elaborate diffusion schemes are briefly discussed.

Title: Bulk viscosities for cold Fermi superfluids close to the unitary limit

  We compute the coefficients of bulk viscosity for a non-relativistic
superfluid corresponding to a fermionic system close to the unitarity limit. We
consider the low temperature regime assuming that the transport properties of
the system are dominated by phonons. To compute the coefficients of bulk
viscosity we use kinetic theory in the relaxation time approximation and the
low energy effective field theory of the corresponding system. We show that the
three independent bulk viscosity coefficients, $\zeta_1, \zeta_2, \zeta_3$,
associated with irreversible flows vanish for phonons with a linear dispersion
law. Considering a phonon dispersion law with a cubic term in momentum we find
that in the conformal limit $\zeta_1 = \zeta_2=0$, while $\zeta_3$ is non-zero.
Including a conformal breaking term which arises for a large but finite s-wave
scattering length, $a$, at the leading order in $1/a$ we obtain that $\zeta_1
\propto 1/a$ and $\zeta_2 \propto 1/a^2$.

  Mean field (MF) methods constitute a very powerful tool for investigations of
weakly interacting many-body systems in many branches of physics. In articular
they describe with an excellent accuracy trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. A
generic, but difficult question concerns the relation between the symmetry
properties of the true many-body state and its MF approximation. We address
this question by considering vortex nucleation in a rotating Bose-Einstein
condensate (BEC). A slow sweep of the rotation frequency changes the state of
the system from being at rest to the one containing one vortex. Within the MF
framework, the jump in the symmetry occurs through a turbulent phase around a
certain critical frequency. The exact many-body ground state at the critical
frequency corresponds to a fragmented condensate with strong correlations and
entanglement. We believe that this constitutes a paradigm example of symmetry
breaking/change in the adiabatic evolution of quantum many-body systems.

Title: Exact solution of the Bose-Hubbard model on the Bethe lattice

  The exact solution of a quantum Bethe lattice model in the thermodynamic
limit amounts to resolve a functional self-consistent equation. In this paper
we obtain this equation for the Bose-Hubbard model on the Bethe lattice, under
two equivalent forms. The first one, based on a coherent state path integral,
leads in the large connectivity limit to the mean field treatment of Fisher et
al. [Phys. Rev. B 40, 546 (1989)] at the leading order, and to the bosonic
Dynamical Mean Field Theory as a first correction, as recently derived by
Byczuk and Vollhardt [Phys. Rev. B 77, 235106 (2008)]. We obtain an alternative
form of the equation using the occupation number representation, which can be
easily solved with an arbitrary numerical precision, for any finite
connectivity. We thus compute the transition line between the superfluid and
Mott insulator phases of the model, along with thermodynamic observables and
the space and imaginary time dependence of correlation functions. The finite
connectivity of the Bethe lattice induces a richer physical content with
respect to its mean-field counterpart: a notion of distance between sites of
the lattice is preserved, and the bosons are still weakly mobile in the Mott
insulator phase. The Bethe lattice construction can be viewed as an
approximation to the finite dimensional version of the model. We show indeed a
quantitatively reasonable agreement between our predictions and the results of
Quantum Monte Carlo simulations in two and three dimensions.

of classical statistical physics. Both correspond to isolated subsystems of
ensembles describing the particle and its environment. The property of a
particle being "classical" or "quantum" ceases to be a basic conceptual
difference. The dynamics differs, however, between quantum and classical
particles. We describe location, motion and correlations of a quantum particle
in terms of observables in a classical statistical ensemble. We also construct
explicitly the quantum mechanical Hamiltonian and wave function for classical
particles. Besides conceptual advances, the treatment of classical and quantum
particles in a common formalism could lead to interesting cross-fertilization

propagation based on a split-step Crank-Nicholson method. In a
one-space-variable form of the GP equation we consider the one-dimensional
linear, two-dimensional circularly symmetric, and the three-dimensional
spherically-symmetric traps. In the two-space-variable form we consider the GP
equation in two-dimensional anisotropic and three-dimensional axially-symmetric
traps. The fully-anisotropic three-dimensional GP equation is also considered.
Numerical results for the chemical potential and root-mean-square size of
stationary states are reported using imaginary-time propagation programs for
all the cases and compared with previously obtained results. Also presented are
numerical results of non-stationary oscillation for different trap symmetries
using real-time propagation programs. A set of convenient working codes
developed in Fortran 77 are also provided for all these cases (twelve programs
in all). In the case of two or three space variables, {Fortran 90/95 versions
provide some simplification over the Fortran 77 programs}, and these programs
are also included (six programs in all).

Title: Instability of superfluid Fermi gases induced by a roton-like density
  mode in optical lattices

  We study the stability of superfluid Fermi gases in deep one-dimensional (1D)
and two-dimensional (2D) optical lattices in the BCS-BEC crossover at zero
temperature. Within the tight-binding attractive Hubbard model, we calculate
the spectrum of the low-energy Anderson-Bogoliubov (AB) mode as well as the
single-particle excitations in the presence of superfluid flow in order to
determine the critical velocities. To obtain the spectrum of the AB mode, we
calculate the density response function in the generalized random phase
approximation (GRPA) applying the Green's function formalism developed by
C\^ot\'e and Griffin to the Hubbard model. We find that the spectrum of the AB
mode is separated from the particle-hole continuum having the characteristic
roton-like minimum at short wavelength due to the strong charge-density-wave
(CDW) fluctuations. The energy of the roton-like minimum decreases with
increasing the lattice velocity and it reaches zero at the critical velocity
which is smaller than the pair-breaking velocity. This indicates that the
superfluid state is energetically unstable due to the spontaneous emission of
the short wavelength roton-like excitations of the AB mode instead due to
pair-breaking. We determine the critical velocities as functions of the
interaction strength across the BCS-BEC crossover regime.

from the general perspective of dynamics of integrable systems. After outlining
and critically reviewing methods based on inverse scattering transform,
intertwining operators, q-deformed objects, and extended dynamical conformal
symmetry, we focus on the form-factor based approach. Motivated by possible
applications in nonlinear quantum optics and experiments with ultracold atoms,
we concentrate on the regime of strong repulsive interactions. We consider
dynamical evolution starting from two initial states: a condensate of particles
in a state with zero momentum and a condensate of particles in a gaussian
wavepacket in real space. Combining the form-factor approach with the method of
intertwining operator we develop a numerical procedure which allows explicit
summation over intermediate states and analysis of the time evolution of
non-local density-density correlation functions. In both cases we observe a
tendency toward formation of crystal-like correlations at intermediate time
scales.

  We describe an apparatus for quickly and simply producing $\Rb87$
Bose-Einstein condensates. It is based on a magnetic quadrupole trap and a red
detuned optical dipole trap. We collect atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT)
and then capture the atom in a magnetic quadrupole trap and force rf
evaporation. We then transfer the resulting cold, dense cloud into a spatially
mode-matched optical dipole trap by lowering the quadrupole field gradient to
below gravity. This technique combines the efficient capture of atoms from a
MOT into a magnetic trap with the rapid evaporation of optical dipole traps;
the approach is insensitive to the peak quadrupole gradient and the precise
trapping beam waist. Our system reliably produces a condensate with
$N\approx2\times10^6$ atoms every $16\second$.

corresponding to an instantaneously spreading of source effects over the whole
space. Other detector models, obtained with non-standard or the no-application
of RWA, give instead local responses to field quanta, apart from source
independent vacuum contribution linked to preexisting correlations of
zero-point field.

we demonstrate an area enhancement of a factor of 3.46 with respect to the
traditionally used geometry.

correlated ultracold Fermi gases, and the quark gluon plasma. We discuss the

regard to the observation of hydrodynamic behavior in ultracold Fermi gases and
