The development of solid state quantum computer (SSQC) technology requires simultaneous advances in
Our main goals with respect to the engineering of a SSQC prototype on a four year timescale (1999-2002) are the construction and characterisation of a two-qubit device which will form the fundamental building block of a scaleable silicon-based QC and the development of a fabrication "blueprint" for a practical, large-scale solid state QC (greater than 100 qubits) based on a planar array of 31P dopants (nuclear spin I=1/2) embedded in isotopically-pure 28Si (I=0).
The central SSQC projects will be complemented by experimental programs in Quantum Optics and Ion Trap systems to address fundamental science issues in quantum compution in these more developed (but less scaleable) approaches.
