Students
This page contains a list of students that I have advised or co-advised
since I came to the University of Queensland.
Postgraduate Students
Brendan Griffen
(Ph.D. 2008-2010)
Brendan is working on analyzing the Aquarius simulation to deduce the origins of globular clusters and other compact stellar systems.
Russell Jurek
(Ph.D. 2005-2008; mid year start)
Russell is part of the WiggleZ team and is researching the dark
energy equation of state of the Universe.
Jason
Moore (M.Sc. 2005-2008)
Jason is working with me on image enhancement techniques and
application of mathematical morphology. We are using this technology
to explore the morphology density star-formation relation in filaments
of galaxies.
Peter Firth (Ph.D. 2005-2008)
Peter is investigating the properties of Ultra-compact
Dwarf galaxies, primarily working
with Michael Drinkwater and Ekaterina Evstigneeva.
Isaac Roseboom (Ph.D. 2004-2007)
I co-supervised Isaac with Michael Drinkwater on the Luminous
Red Galaxy Survey being carried out by the large SDSS-2dF consortia.
He has been investigating the spectral properties of this sample and the
fraction of E+A galaxies.
Marianne Doyle (Ph.D. 2003-2006)
I have advised Marianne in a minor capacity during her Ph.D.
on the HIPASS sample.
Honours students (4th yr undergraduate, the equivalent of a research Masters in the UK)
Claire Reeves (Honours 2007-2008)
Claire is working on investigating the evolution in filaments
of galaxies between z=0.5 (from 2SLAQ) versus z=0.1 (from 2dFGRS).
Peter Jensen (Honours 2007-2008)
Peter is examining the stellar populations of galaxies contained
in intermediate X-ray luminosity clusters of galaxies.
Chris Banks (Honours 2007-2008)
Chris is probing the star formation rate of WiggleZ galaxies over
the range in redshift of 0.5 to 1.2.
Undergraduates
Cherie Fishlock (Summer Scholar 2008-9)
Cherie worked on reducing Gemini South Observations of cD galaxies
with large peculiar velocities. Inparticular, a case study of A3827
is underway.
Sean Simpson (Summer Scholar 2008-9)
Sean worked in image processing and followed up Catherine Farage's work
by identifying classes of cosmic rays that always cause automated
algorithms difficulty. The plan is to turn this information in
to a strong captcha system.
Katy Francis (Summer Scholar 2007-8 and 2008-9)
Following up on our Mathematical Morphology work, Katy
examined the physical basis for adopting this system of quantitative
galaxy morphology.
In 2008/9, she worked on determining the GALEX UV and 2MASS IR colours
of "frosting" galaxies in a sample of Dumbbell BCG clusters.
Catherine Farage (Summer Scholar 2005)
Catherine worked on benchmarking a number of cosmic ray
rejection techniques on both mock and real
single-shot astronomical images.
Andrew Stephenson (Summer Scholar 2004,2005)
Andrew aided in the reduction of WFI imaging of z=0.1
superclusters by creating a world
coordinate system for the data and subsequently making a catalogue
of galaxies from which we will select objects for spectroscopic
follow-up observations.
Betina Horn (2004)
CSIRO research scheme student.
Mark Matthews (2004)
CSIRO research scheme student.
Christoph Mosny (Summer Scholar 2003-2004)
Christoph created a fuzzy-logic code to search for clusters of galaxies
in our WFI imaging data that used density, colour, magnitude, galaxy
size and stellarity to determine their existence.
Eva Windle (2003)
CSIRO research scheme student.
