Any interested parties may download my honours thesis in either gzipped postscript or pdf format. It still contains many typos - don't say I didn't warn you!

Thumbs Up!
2/01 Thumbs up to William Gibson for his latest novel, All Tomorrow's Parties. (Get your excerpt here.) I bought this immediately when I saw it, Bill having sat at the pinnacle of my must read list for years. I wasn't disappointed! ATP is the most recent addition to the saga which began with Virtual Light and continued in Idoru. As with much of Gibson's work, this book is not so much a story as it is a collection of overlapping accounts of a story seen through the mind's eyes of many characters. As always, Gibson has handled this stunningly well, his human cameras being chosen from all over the social scale - each having their unique perspective on a situation, seemingly without regard for their influence on it. Gibson's world is lovingly crafted and instantly believable, a world in which the key players are usually the homeless, the intellectually disabled and those who aren't lucky enough to possess a body - a world described perfectly by the poetic introspection his characters frequently entertain. A beautiful book, in every sense of the word.

8/00 Huge thumbs up to Neal Stephenson for his fantastic novel, Cryptonomicon. (The first few chapters are available for download from the book's website.) As much an historical text as it is a techno-thriller, Cryptonomicon is an account of the world's reaction to people ahead of their time. If crypto, data-havens, TEMPEST, the development of digital computers or even old war films are your thing, then read it. If they're not, read it anyway - the theme with your name on it is probably the one I forgot to mention. Onya Neal!

I was once informed by a colleague that, as I had managed to become
proficient using vi, I must have far too much spare time.
I informed him that if he too became proficient using vi,
he might also have far too much spare time.

life is short, code is not, vi rules.
