The Lighthouse Story |
The fourth Tools of Science meeting for 2007 will be held at 6pm on Tuesday May 22 in Richards (5) LR207* The speaker will be Col Gladstone and the topic: The Lighthouse Story This is a story of marine navigation aids in the era of technology change. When most people think of lighthouses they think of people living on isolated islands and reefs with powerful lights sending out beams to ships at sea. But there have been automatic lights for over eighty years and the end of an era came in the 1980s when the last of the lights were automated. The talk will include a brief history of lighthouses and deals with lights from acetylene and kerosene, through to solar power and other modern electronic aids. Col Gladstone started work with the lighthouse service in 1960 as a mechanic and retired in 1996. During this period he maintained lighthouse equipment in all states of Australia and was area manager at Thursday Island which has perhaps the most diverse range of navigation aids in Australia. Col is also interested in amateur radio and is a volunteer at the Queensland Maritime Museum and at the Seafarers' Centre. Light refreshments will be served after the talk. *Note change from former venue. As a result of UQ room allocation policy, Tools of Science will no longer have a permanent home, so please note the different venue each time. |
