For students, scientists,
engineers, historians of science and technology, teachers,
collectors, and all those fascinated by old scientific instruments
August 20, 6pm Vacuum
Tubes
Dr. Norman Heckenberg, Reader in Physics, Director of the Physics Museum
The theme of "Vacuum Tubes" will be interpreted liberally to include electrical discharge tubes, radiometers, X-ray tubes and light bulbs as well as the ‘valves’ which made the development of such hallmarks of the twentieth century as communication electronics, television, and computing possible. Some of the links between these devices will be sought and some contributions from UQ physicists revealed. The lecture will be illustrated with many items from the collection of the Physics Museum.
