Honours in Physics

Honours in Physics is a one-year postgraduate degree that follows on from a Bachelor of Science majoring in physics.  Half of the year is spent completing advanced coursework in physics, and the other half working on an independent research project with the assistance of members of staff in their specialised area of research.

A B.Sc. (Hons) degree in physics is an attractive qualification for employers as it will:
  • Provide an introduction to serious research.
  • Significantly enhance your problem solving skills (which are already excellent if you are a physicist)
  • Improve your communication and writing skills.
With good results it is sufficient for entry into further postgraduate study such as the M.Phil/D.Phil, and can win you scholarships for this study such as an Australian Postgraduate Award.   By the end you are well on your way to becoming a real researcher with a significant set of valuable technical and problem solving skills.

Honours students are fully-fledged members of the discipline of physics.  You will have a desk where you may leave your things, and will be granted after-hours access to your office and research lab.  You will have access to computing facilities, email, etc, and will have frequent, personal contact with staff and research students.
