Physics Honours Coursework

Honours Coursework

Physics Honours

In semester one there are two compulsory courses, each worth two units.  These are

PHYS6041 - Advanced Quantum Theory
PHYS6030 - Advanced Electromagnetic Theory

In the second semester you must choose two out of four courses.  There are different offerings in odd and even years; however, you should note that you can take these courses as part of your undergraduate degree as well.

Odd years

PHYS4030 - Condensed Matter Physics: Electronic Properties of crystals
PHYS4072 - Techniques of Experimental Physics & Data Analysis
MATH3103 - Algebraic Methods in Mathematical Physics
MATH4104 - Advanced Hamiltonian Dynamics and Chaos

Even years

PHYS4060 - Laser Physics & Atom-Light Interactions
PHYS4070 - Advanced Computational Physics
PHYS4090 - Quantum Optics & Stochastic Processes
MATH4105 - General Relativity

In addition, you should enroll in the 8 unit Physics Honours research project.  If you start in semester one the course code is PHYS6487, if you begin in semester two it is PHYS6488.

Biophysics Honours

Biophysics honours students must take four courses, which can be any of the courses taken by physics honours students or any of the following:

PHYS6170 - Special Topics in Biophysics (Semester 1)
MATH3104 - Mathematical Biology (Semester 1)
NEUR3001 - Molecular & Cellular Neuroscience (Semester 1)
BIOC3004 - Structural Biology: Macromolecular Structure (Semester 2)
MATH3102 - Methods and Models of Applied Mathematics (Semester 2)
