SITUATIONS VACANT Department of Physics/Centre for Laser Science. Lecturer level B( 5 year fixed term) Experimental Laser Physics The Department of Physics offers a three year undergraduate course for the B.Sc degree, and a four year B.Sc. Honours Degree. It also undertakes service teaching to other Departments including Engineering and Biological Science Departments. Postgraduate degrees that may be undertaken in the Department are P.G.Dip. , MSc. and PhD. Applications are sought for the position of Lecturer (fixed term), level B in The Department of Physics. The successful applicant will also hold a position in the Centre for Laser Science. The Centre for Laser Science is a category one centre in the Department of Physics, with both theoretical and experimental research programs. The experimental programs include: optical tweezers, laser cooling and trapping and atom optics, nonlinear spectroscopy of high velocity flows and laser dynamics . The Centre currently has 5 academic staff, 10 postdoctoral research students and more than 20 postgraduate students. The title of the grant in "Extremely asymmetrical scattering of optical and acoustic waves in periodic Bragg arrays". The work will be related with theoretical and numerical analysis of linear Bragg scattering of bulk optical and surface acoustic (Rayleigh) waves in uniform and non-uniform gratings in the extremely asymetrical geometry. The work will include numerical analysis of differential equations with variable coefficients and special boundary conditions (at the array boundaries), numerical analysis of frequency response and angular dependence of the extremely asymmetrical scattering in non-uniform arrays with varying grating amplitude. Therefore, I would like the RA to have skills and experience in numerical methods in physics. Haroche, J.M. Raimond, M. Brune A postdoctoral position is opened to work on the cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments in the ENS group. We use circular Rydberg atoms and very high quality cavities to perform fundamental tests of quantum mechanics. Quantum Rabi oscillation, providing a very direct evidence of field quantization, decoherence of a quantum superpositions of mesoscopic field states with different phases (Schrodinger cat state) have been observed recently. The very simple atom-field interaction may also be used to produce and manipulate quantum entanglement. We have prepared a pair of EPR-correlated atoms and studied the operation of an elementary "quantum memory". In the near future, we plan to investigate more sophisticated types of entanglement. One major step is the realization of a Quantum Non Demolition detection of a single photon. This opens the way to the entanglement of multiple atomic systems. The mere demonstration of the QND measurement amounts in the preparation of a triplet of entangled particles. Such triplets may be used for stringent tests of the non-local nature of quantum mechanics. We also plan to realize a direct measurement of the cavity field's Wigner function. This measurement could be applied to various non-classical states: one photon or few photons Fock states as well as "Schrodinger cat" states, resulting in very precise tests of the decoherence models. The position, supported by the "Quantum Information" HCM EEC network, is opened for one or two years. The candidates should have an excellent background in experimental physics, preferably in quantum optics and/or laser or microwave physics. Selected relevant publications: 1- M. Brune et al. Phys. A vacancy exists for a Research Associate to work in the area of theoretical atoms optics. The project concerns theoretical modelling of laser cooled atoms in modulated optical standing waves in support of experiments in nonlinear atom optics. The project is directed by Professor Gerard J.
