Centre research programs are focussed on the technology of building a prototype solid-state quantum computer in silicon and the fundamental physics thereof. The ability of a quantum computer to carry out calculations by the manipulation of superpositions of quantum states provides massive parallel processing leading to unprecedented computing power in applications of commercial and national significance.
Construction of the quantum computational device will take place at UNSW's Semiconductor Nanofabrication Facility in collaboration with Universities of Queensland and Melbourne, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA. The Centre will enable Australia to play a central role in the development of 21st century computer technology.
