Title: Superconducting qubits

From a physicist's standpoint, the most interesting part of quantum computing
research may well be the possibility to probe the boundary between the quantum
and the classical worlds. The more macroscopic are the structures involved, the
better. So far, the most "macroscopic" qubit prototypes that have been studied
in the laboratory are certain kinds of superconducting qubits. To get a feeling
for how macroscopic these systems can be, the states of flux qubits which are
brought in a quantum superposition corresponds to currents composed of as much
as 10^5-10^6 electrons flowing in opposite directions in a superconducting
loop. Non-superconducting qubits realized so far are all essentially
microscopic.

Title: Rabi switch of condensate wavefunctions in a multicomponent Bose gas

\\
Using a time-dependent linear (Rabi) coupling between the components of a
weakly interacting multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), we propose a
protocol for transferring the wavefunction of one component to the other. This
"Rabi switch" can be generated in a binary BEC mixture by an electromagnetic
field between the two components, typically two hyperfine states. When the
wavefunction to be transfered is - at a given time - a stationary state of the
multicomponent Hamiltonian, then, after a time delay (depending on the Rabi
frequency), it is possible to have the same wavefunction on the other
condensate. The Rabi switch can be used to transfer also moving bright
matter-wave solitons, as well as vortices and vortex lattices in
two-dimensional condensates. The efficiency of the proposed switch is shown to
be 100% when inter-species and intra-species interaction strengths are equal.
The deviations from equal interaction strengths are analyzed within a two-mode
model and the dependence of the efficiency on the interaction strengths and on
the presence of external potentials is examined in both 1D and 2D settings.

A phase transition for bosonic atoms in a two-dimensional anisotropic optical
lattice is considered. If the tunnelling rates in two directions are different,
the system can undergo a transition between a two-dimensional superfluid and a
one-dimensional Mott insulating array of strongly coupled tubes. The connection
to other lattice models is exploited in order to better understand the phase
transition. Critical properties are obtained using quantum Monte Carlo
calculations. These critical properties are related to correlation properties
of the bosons and a criterion for commensurate filling is established.

Title: Kondo polarons in a one-dimensional Fermi gas
Authors: Austen Lamacraft
Categories: cond-mat.mes-hall cond-mat.str-el
\\
We consider the motion of a spin-1/2 impurity in a one-dimensional gas of
spin-1/2 fermions. For antiferromagnetic interaction between the impurity and
the fermions, the low temperature behavior of the system is governed by the
two-channel Kondo effect, leading to the impurity becoming completely opaque to
the spin excitations of the gas. As well as the known spectral signatures of
the two-channel Kondo effect, we find that the low temperature mobility of the
resulting `Kondo polaron' takes the universal form $\mu\to \frac{3\hbar
v_F^2}{2\pi k_B^2T^2}$, in sharp contrast to the spinless case where
$\mu\propto T^{-4}$.

Developing a theoretical framework to access quantum phases of itinerant
bosons or fermions in two dimensions (2D) that exhibit singular structure along
surfaces in momentum space but have no quasi-particle description remains as a
central challenge in the field of strongly correlated physics. In this paper we
propose that distinctive signatures of such 2D strongly correlated phases will
be manifest in quasi-one-dimensional "N-leg ladder" systems. Characteristic of
each parent 2D quantum liquid would be a precise pattern of 1D gapless modes on
the N-leg ladder. These signatures could be potentially exploited to approach
the 2D phases from controlled numerical and analytical studies in quasi-1D. As
a first step we explore itinerant boson models with a frustrating ring exchange
interaction on the 2-leg ladder, searching for signatures of the recently
proposed two-dimensional d-wave correlated Bose liquid (DBL) phase. A
combination of exact diagonalization, density matrix renormalization group,
variational Monte Carlo, and bosonization analysis of a quasi-1D gauge theory,
all provide compelling evidence for the existence of a new strong-coupling
phase of bosons on the 2-leg ladder which can be understood as a descendant of
the two-dimensional DBL. We suggest several generalizations to quantum spin and
electron Hamiltonians on ladders which could likewise reveal fingerprints of
such 2D non-Fermi liquid phases.

Title: Directly determining the relative phase of two coherent solitary waves

Authors: Weibin Li

\\
We study the dynamic structure factor of two coherent bright solitary waves
in attractive Bose- Einstein condensates confined in a harmonic trap. We
demonstrate that the wave function of the two solitary waves with a fixed
relative phase shows interference in momentum space. The fringes are shifted
depending on the values of the phase. This momentum interference can be
extracted from the dynamic structure factor of the system using stimulated
two-photon Bragg scattering. Thus our method provides a way to measure the
relative phase directly.

We report on measurements of the excitation spectrum of a strongly
interacting Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). A magnetic-field Feshbach resonance
is used to tune atom-atom interactions in the condensate and to reach a regime
where quantum depletion and beyond mean-field corrections to the condensate
chemical potential are significant. We use two-photon Bragg spectroscopy to
probe the condensate excitation spectrum; our results demonstrate the onset of
beyond mean-field effects in a gaseous BEC.

We introduce a model motivated by studies of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs)
trapped in double-well potentials. We assume that a mixture of two hyperfine
states of the same atomic species is loaded in such a trap. The analysis is
focused on symmetry-breaking bifurcations in the system, starting at the linear
limit and gradually increasing the nonlinearity. Depending on values of the
chemical potentials of the two species, we find numerous states, as well as
symmetry-breaking bifurcations, in addition to those known in the
single-component setting. These branches, which include all relevant stationary
solutions of the problem, are predicted analytically by means of a two-mode
approximation, and confirmed numerically. For unstable branches, outcomes of
the instability development are explored in direct simulations.

Javanainen and Yoo (J. Javanainen and S. M. Yoo, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 161

We study cold atomic gases in a disorder potential and analyze the
correlations between different systems subjected to the same disorder
landscape. Such independent copies with the same disorder landscape are known
as replicas. While in general these are not accessible experimentally in
condensed matter systems, they can be realized using standard tools for
controlling cold atomic gases in an optical lattice. Of special interest is the
overlap function which represents a natural order parameter for disordered
systems and is a correlation function between the atoms of two independent
replicas with the same disorder. We demonstrate an efficient measurement scheme
for the determination of this disorder-induced correlation function. As an
application, we focus on the disordered Bose-Hubbard model and determine the
overlap function within perturbation theory and a numerical analysis. We find
that the measurement of the overlap function allows for the identification of
the Bose-glass phase in certain parameter regimes.

A Bose-Einstein condensate in a tilted double-well potential under the
influence of time-periodic potential differences is investigated in the regime
where the mean-field (Gross-Pitaevskii) dynamics become chaotic. For some
parameters near stable regions, even averaging over several condensate
oscillations does not remove the differences between mean-field and N-particle
results. While introducing decoherence via piecewise deterministic processes
reduces those differences, they are due to the emergence of mesoscopic

We consider squeezing of one component of the collective spin vector of an
atomic ensemble inside an optical cavity. The atoms interact with a cavity
mode, and the squeezing is obtained by probing the state of the light field
that is transmitted through the cavity. Starting from the stochastic master
equation, we derive the time evolution of the state of the atoms and the cavity
field, and we compute expectation values and variances of the atomic spin
components and the quadratures of the cavity mode. The performance of the setup

such as a laser beam. These subtle quantum fluctuations may be used to encode
quantum information. Although intensity is easily measured with common
photodetectors, accessing the phase information requires interference
experiments. We introduce one such technique, the rotation of the noise ellipse

density profiles of $^6$Li atoms in the BCS-BEC crossover regime we identify a
critical interaction strength, beyond which all minority atoms pair up with
majority atoms, and form a Bose condensate. This is the regime where the system
can be effectively described as a boson-fermion mixture. We determine the

We study the ground states of one-dimensional Bose-Bose mixtures under
harmonic confinement. As we vary the inter-species coupling strength up to the
limit of infinite repulsion, we observe a generalized, composite-fermionization
crossover. The initially coexisting phases demix as a whole (for weak
intra-species interactions) and separate on an atomic level (for strong
intra-species repulsion). By symmetry, the two components end up with strongly
overlapping profiles, albeit sensitive to symmetry-breaking perturbations.
Different pathways emerge in case the two components have different atom

\\
The aim of the present review is to introduce the reader to some of the
physical notions and of the mathematical methods that are relevant to the study
of nonlinear waves in Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs). Upon introducing the
general framework, we discuss the prototypical models that are relevant to this
setting for different dimensions and different potentials confining the atoms.
We analyze some of the model properties and explore their typical wave
solutions (plane wave solutions, bright, dark, gap solitons, as well as
vortices). We then offer a collection of mathematical methods that can be used
to understand the existence, stability and dynamics of nonlinear waves in such
BECs, either directly or starting from different types of limits (e.g., the
linear or the nonlinear limit, or the discrete limit of the corresponding
equation). Finally, we consider some special topics involving more recent
developments, and experimental setups in which there is still considerable need
for developing mathematical as well as computational tools.

\\
We study the photonic interactions between two distant atoms which are
coupled by an optical element (a lens or an optical fiber) focussing part of
their emitted radiation onto each other. Two regimes are distinguished
depending on the ratio between the radiative lifetime of the atomic excited
state and the propagation time of a photon between the two atoms. In the two
regimes, well below saturation the dynamics exhibit either typical features of
a bad resonator, where the atoms act as the mirrors, or typical characteristics

relaxation and apparent thermalization in non-equilibrium dynamics without the

Authors: X. Du, L. Luo, B. Clancy, and J. E. Thomas

\\
We report the observation of spin segregation, i.e., separation of spin
density profiles, in a trapped ultracold Fermi gas of $^6$Li with a
magnetically tunable scattering length close to zero. The roles of the spin
components are inverted when the sign of the scattering length is reversed. The
observed density profiles are in qualitative agreement with the spin-wave
theory applied previously to explain spin segregation in a Bose gas, but
disagree in amplitude by two orders of magnitude. The observed atomic density
profiles are far from equilibrium, yet they persist for $\simeq$ 5 seconds in a
trap with an axial frequency of $\simeq$ 150 Hz. We attribute this long
lifetime to Fermi statistics: The scattering amplitude is nonzero only for
atoms in opposite states, and vanishes for atoms in the same state. By
measuring the magnetic field at which spin segregation ceases, we precisely
determine the zero crossing in the scattering length of $^6$Li as $527.5\pm0.2$

Title: Exactly solvable models for triatomic-molecular Bose-Einstein
   Condensates

We construct a family of triatomic models for heteronuclear and homonuclear
molecular Bose-Einstein condensates. We show that these new generalized models
are exactly solvable through the algebraic Bethe ansatz method and derive their
corresponding Bethe ansatz equations and energies.

Title: Laguerre-Gaussian Modes and the Wigner Transform
Authors: Michael VanValkenburgh
Categories: quant-ph
\\
Recent developments in laser physics have called renewed attention to orbital
angular momentum modes for the paraxial wave equation. In this paper we will
consider the corresponding Laguerre-Gaussian modes for the two-dimensional
harmonic oscillator, which appear in the transversal plane at the laser beam's
waist. We will see how they arise as Wigner transforms of Hermite-Gaussian
modes, and then we will proceed to find their own Wigner transforms. The main
observation is that the Wigner transform intertwines the creation and
annihilation operators for the two classes of modes. Our methods provide an
alternative to other recent methods of Gase and Simon--Agarwal, and indeed give
a more general result.

Title: Mesoscopic pendulum and giant-persistent current on a superconducting
   ring
Authors: Yanzhang He, Chengguang Bao
Categories: cond-mat.other
\\
A device as a controllable quantum pendulum based on a mesoscopic
superconducting ring is proposed. The ring is threaded by a magnetic flux. A
potential is set upon a segment of the ring to localize the electron initially.
Then a sudden cancellation of both the potential and the flux may cause an
exact periodic motion of the electron, which is in nature different from the
well known Aharonov-Bohm (A-B) oscillation. The period of oscillation is
controllable. The associated persistent current can be tuned more than two
orders larger than the usual A-B current. Related theory and numerical results
are presented.

Title: Absolute absorption on the rubidium D lines: comparison between theory
   and experiment

\\
We study the Doppler-broadened absorption of a weak monochromatic probe beam
in a thermal rubidium vapour cell on the D lines. A detailed model of the
susceptibility is developed which takes into account the absolute linestrengths
of the allowed electric dipole transitions and the motion of the atoms parallel
to the probe beam. All transitions from both hyperfine levels of the ground
term of both isotopes are incorporated. The absorption and refractive index as
a function of frequency are expressed in terms of the complementary error
function. The absolute absorption profiles are compared with experiment, and
are found to be in excellent agreement provided a sufficiently weak probe beam
with an intensity under one thousandth of the saturation intensity is used. The
importance of hyperfine pumping for open transitions is discussed in the
context of achieving the weak-probe limit. Theory and experiment show excellent
agreement, with an rms error better than 0.2% for the D2 line at 16.5 degrees
